When you are on one of the scenic views in the Rocky Mountains you feel like you are on top of the world. I never thought when we moved out east that I would miss the mountains that I have seen my whole life. We lived in the foothills. I woke up every day to the purple mountains majesty.
In the summer we would go for drives in the Rockies to cool off.
The mountain air was cool and the creeks were cold. We would stop and put our feet in the water. The water was runoff from the higher mountains where the snow was melting.

The lands now known as Rocky Mountain National Park have been home to humans for at least ten thousand years. The landscape reflects the culture of the people who have walked it, from Native Americans to its visitors today.

While massive glaciers shaped the meadows and peaks, Rocky was an inhospitable land. It was not until some 11,000 years ago that humans began venturing into these valleys and mountains. Spearheads broken in the fury of a mammoth's charge and scrapers discarded along a nomad's trail tell us little about the area's early native peoples. Even though it was never their year-round home, the Ute tribe favored the areas green valleys, tundra meadows, and crystal lakes. The Ute Indians dominated the area until the late 1700s.

With the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the U.S. government acquired the land now known as Rocky Mountain National Park. Spanish explorers and French fur trappers skirted the area.

The Pikes Peak gold rush of 1859 drew hopeful miners and speculators. Their settlements at places like Lulu City. The rousing boom times yielded to an industrious homesteading period starting in the 1860s. Harsh winters proved inhospitable to grazing.
The abundant bears, deer, wolves, and elk howled through the trees and the mountains continued to draw Easterners impressed by the landscape. Mountain water proved more precious than gold.

With the ranchers and hunters and miners and homesteaders came tourists. By 1900, the growing national conservation and preservation movement, led by Theodore Roosevelt, Gifford Pinchot, and John Muir, advocated an appreciation for nature.

Longmont Colorado is my Hometown.

I wanted to share with you a little history of the town I came from Longmont Colorado.

1800 - Arapaho Indians move into the area from further north, often hunting and camping in the St. Vrain Valley.

1820 - Major Stephen H. Long leads an expedition for the U. S. Topographical Engineers along the South Platte, draws first maps of region.

1838 - Bent, St. Vrain & Co. build a trading fort near where a small river flows into the South Platte. Trappers begin to call the stream St. Vrain's creek.

1860 - Alonzo N. Allen moves his partially completed cabin from Boulder Creek to St. Vrain's creek, near the confluence of St. Vrain and Left Hand Creeks.

1861-70 Town of Burlington grows up around the Burlington Stage stop, where the Overland Stage crosses the St. Vrain. (Overland Stage route is modern U. S. 287, Main Street in Longmont).

1870 - The Denver Pacific and the Kansas Pacific railroads reach Denver, making travel to Colorado much easier.

1871 - The Chicago-Colorado Colony chooses a location, plats the original square mile and settles their new town, naming it Longmont. Residents of Burlington move themselves and most of the buildings to Longmont, about a quarter mile north.

1873 - The Colorado Central Railroad completes track from Golden to Longmont.

1876 - Colorado becomes a state.

1879 - Fire destroys the 300 block of Main Street in Longmont. The downtown is rebuilt in brick.

1887 - John H. Empson opens the J. H. Empson Cannery in Longmont, canning peas and other vegetables.

1898 - J. C. Penney opens a butcher shop on Main Street. After failing in this business, he worked for T. M. Callahan's Golden Rule Store in Longmont. Ultimately, Penney would set up a Golden Rule Store in Kemmerer, Wyoming that would be the beginning of his retail empire.

1899 - The first official Pumpkin Pie Days for which Longmont became famous, baking 10,000 pies for people coming from all across the Front Range. The original Pumpkin Pie Days were held from 1899-1915.

1900 - Theodore Roosevelt makes a campaign stop in Longmont.

1903 - The Longmont Sugar Factory built. Soon renamed the Great Western Sugar factory, it played a vital role in farming and the development of Longmont.

1905 - Masonic Temple on Main Street burns down, but the Dickens Opera House next door is saved. The Masonic Temple would be rebuilt.

1908 - Longmont High School "Beetdiggers" became the "World Champion Interscholastic Football Team" beating Chicago's Englewood High in a Christmas Day game in Denver.

1911 - Longmont builds a hydropower plant on the North St. Vrain river, providing reliable electric power to its residents.

1913 - The Carnegie library in Longmont opens at 4th Ave. and Kimbark St. Also, the greatest snow in the history of the area occurs.

1918 - Great influenza epidemic forces City Council to ban public gatherings, but many Longmont residents die in spite of precautions.

1925 - The Ku Klux Klan, riding a wave of statewide popularity, elects a majority in the Longmont City Council. The Council began ousting longtime City officials and replacing them with Klan members.

1926 - City Council, controlled by the Klan, votes to build Chimney Rock Dam, a combination water storage and hydropower project, located just above the existing Longmont Dam on the North St. Vrain. Cost estimates rise from $85,000 to $350,000.

1927 - All Klan candidates for City Council are defeated in the April election, and construction is halted on Chimney Rock Dam.

1930s - Many area farms are lost during the Great Depression.

1941-1945 Longmont citizens serve around the world during World War II. In Longmont, the Great Western Sugar dormitory at 3rd Ave. and Kimbark St. is converted to house Italian and German POWs who then worked on area farms.

1946 - Gibson Manufacturing Co. opens a tractor factory in Longmont, the first new heavy industry to locate in Longmont in over forty years. Production of Gibson tractors ceases.

I love history. I guess I was missing my home town. Thinking about some of the people I new when I was younger.

How can anyone say people were healthier in the 1960's

We were healthier because we ate very little meat. We ate lots of vegetables and fruits, very few sweets, no sweetened drinks. No fast foods. No highly processed foods. Physically we worked and played much harder. We didn't spend hours in front of the television or computer.

We didn't spend hours on the phone texting. Children walked everywhere, swam, played ball with neighbors. We rode bicycles, played jump rope, ran just for the fun of it, spent much more time outside.

We couldn't walk to the corner convenience store and get all the candy and sodas. Things like donuts, and candy bars were a once or twice a year treat. We had no steroids, antibiotics, or hormones in our meats and dairy products. If we were thirsty, we drank water. That's how I grew up.

We now have an epidemic of obese children, and children and teens with type 2 diabetes, more allergies, more asthma, and heart problems are affecting people at younger and younger ages. We lived much healthier lives in the 60s. Can you relate?

Some say that Serotonin is The chemistry of Well-Being.

More than 100,000 chemical reactions go on in your brain every second! The brain is also

a radio transmitter, which sends out measurable electrical wave signals. In fact the brain continues to send out these signals for as long as 37 hours after death!

Among the brain's many jobs is to be your own chemist. The brain produces more than 50 identified active drugs. Some of these are associated with memory, others with intelligence, still others are sedatives. Endorphin is the brain's painkiller, and it is 3 times more potent than morphine.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, involved in the transmission of nerve impulses. It is manufactured in your body using the amino acid tryptophan. Our Grandchildren.... You Can't Trust 'em!

That is what Papa said, " you can't trust them to bring you a cup of tea." Even if it is just play time.

One day my husband and I were watching our granddaughter Athena. I had to go to the store, so my Papa stayed with the little one. She was 3-years-old at the time. She was playing with her tea set when I left.

I was maybe gone for about an hour. When I got home Papa was in the living room engrossed in the evening news. Athena had given him a little cup of "tea," which was just water.

After several cups of tea and lots of praise from Papa, for such yummy tea.

The blue line at the top is the US; the other lines are for other advanced countries. What I find most striking here is the higher US level of violence.

Americans not only engage in violence, they are entertained by it. Football, which is so violent it destroys the brains of those who play it.
