DO YOU EVER GET BORED?
by Joseph Tom Riach

Vivid Views  is my series of articles, blog posts and press releases show-casing my work as an author and reflecting my many years in business and self-employment. They are a blend of my real life experiences, professional insights, personal views and fun stories.
My hope is that in them you find enlightenment and inspiration.                                 'Do You Ever Get Bored?' is the 8th in the series.

My response to the question came by way of narrowed eyes and a scathing stare. I uttered no words. It wasn't that I hadn't heard the same asinine, “Do you ever get bored?” query before, it is just that my disappointment with those who pose the question never lessens. After several seconds of charged silence I raised my arm and, palm upturned, made a slow, indicative sweep around me.

“Can you smell the air?” I asked, “It's fresh and clean. Do you not feel the cool caress of the breeze? It carries the scent of wild flowers and the lavender where busy bees are buzzing about their business.” I pointed out the butterflies fluttering by, the dark silhouette of the mountains above us and the sparkling emerald of the ocean below. Lastly I indicated to the table where we sat, spread as it was with fresh local produce; hams, cheeses, fruit, legumes, seafood and wine to delight any palate.

“In your question itself, therein lies the answer,” I said. “You must look deep within your own existence in order to see with clarity why your question is senseless. Come back to me only when you understand the answer.”

With that he left; to resume his life as one of those hollow souls whose 'boredom' is relieved only by clattering cities, chattering technology, hectic greed and the frantic wastefulness of modern society. He never did return.

Had he done so, I would have welcomed him in and revealed to him the simple way to sift out the noisy and unnecessary from life and to concentrate on just those basic elements which really matter – fresh air, sunshine, nature, nourishment, laughter and love. He would first of course have to possess the ambition to better his life in such a way.

He would need to understand that the answers people seek in life are most often revealed in the questions they ask. In that context, “Do you ever get bored?” is a subliminal admission of unfulfilled need within the quester. The answer to which is to create a life in which you never feel a need to ask the question!

Tom, I would have to schedule time for boredom, since I feel that would be a useless waste of my time, I just don't even consider it... Example! I could have sat here & watched something unimportant on the boob tube... Instead, I chose to read your article... Good choice because it is an exceptional read bringing to light on how to make good use of one's time...

These are words of wisdom Tom. There is so much to be grateful for, just opening your eyes in the morning is a blessing. Having loved ones around you, your health and all those are free. Boredom is a excuse that I usually hear from shallow people. They should watch the creativity of a group of children.

Thank you Robin, good to hear your thoughts - boredom can't co-exist with an active imagination.

Bravo and fantastic as usual Tom. I can say for sure that I will never utter those words. When you have created a life you love to live and you enjoy each day to the fullest then there is no need to say the words you spoke about in this post. Thank you for sharing this in the SE community.

Tom always makes it clear where our priorities should be... I will have to look the word boredom up in the dictionary to see if I fully understand the meaning of the word... :D

Boredom... The state of being weary and restless through lack of interest... Just as I thought... That to me sounds like a state of mental depression...

That's right Terri, the 'b' word is non-existent in the minds of those actively engaged in living every second to be the best they can be. Thanks for your thoughts, always got time for hearing those.
