It can be a scary thing when your dog gets kennel cough. You start to wonder if it is contagious. You ask yourself can the kids get it? What will happen if they do? Well, we are going to cover in this article exactly what is involved with having a sick animal with kennel cough.

I first want to express with you that I know what you are feeling right now. I have been there but, I can also tell you that it is not as bad as you may think.

So now for the ultimate question. Can a human get kennel cough? Unfortunately yes though it is not considered kennel cough when it spreads to humans. It is called an upper respiratory infection. The kennel cough virus can be airborne and once it is breathed in by a human host it can turn into a bacterial infection in the air ways. There are steps you can take to help ensure that every one in the house doesn't get sick though.

The first step is the obvious. Get your dog the medicine needed to cure the illness. You can check petmeds.com for the medicines used for this illness. They will have the different medicines to treat the illness. Next is don't let the dog get up in your face and keep the children away from the dog while he/she is sick. This can be a hard thing to do especially if your dog is like mine. Always wanting affection. It is important that you stick to your guns on this though.

The next step is to make sure everyone gets plenty of vitamin C. Things like lots of orange juice and vitamin c pills are okay to. Just don't over do it on the vitamin pills.

Should someone get sick there are a lot of good effective home remedies that can do wonders. One that has been used for years as a good remedy is ginger tea. Get whoever is sick to drink it several times a day. Another not so tasteful choice is a little garlic oil and onion juice mixed in water. Though the taste is not that great it is a very good remedy. I'm not saying that you shouldn't buy over the counter medicine to treat the infection. These remedies are just something to help the medicine along the way.

There are a lot of over the counter medicines that can help you if you catch the virus from your dog. Any upper respiratory infection medicine will do. If you follow these steps until your dog gets over the illness you and your family should be fine.No worries. Till next. See you later.

  • Thanks for the info on the additional remedies Dr. F. They at least sound like they would taste better than what I suggested above.:-). You have a good day.

  • To Merle's comment. lol..I know the feeling :-)

  • Hi Carolyn,

Yes, the vaccine does help the dog get better but, like the article says it is very important to make sure that you and your family have a good immune system..stay healthy. As far as parvo goes it is far more deadly to dogs but, it is not contagious to humans. There is a vaccine to prevent a dog from getting parvo. If a dog has parvo already they do have a vaccine for that but, it is very expensive. If the dog has had it too long. The Humane Society will force you to put them to sleep. I ran across a stray that had parvo and they made me sign him over to put him to sleep so he didn't suffer. Kinda sad because the poor guy was a good dog.

  • Thanks for the share Terri. I appreciate it.

  • Good info! I've heard there is a vaccine for kennel cough. Is it effective? What's the difference between kennel cough and parvo? When I boarded my dog in a kennel, I had to give her those shots. I'm between dogs now, but this info could prove useful down the road. Thanks for sharing!

  • Great post Donald and I never knew humans could get this as well.  My dogs have had kennel cough when left in the kennels.  One of them lost his voice as well (that was six years ago) and still not back to normal.  Not a bad thing though because he can be a bit noisy !!

Thank you for sharing this information. Even though I don't have a pet, it is good to know about kennel cough and how it can affect humans. I have shared this out for more to see.
