What You May Not Know About Comments

Hi All,

I am George Pierce and this is NOT an attention-getting image, but you will find the following advice useful.

Much of my training and much of what I share on SE and YT is based on what I am engaged in at the time.  In other words.

you get to look over my shoulder at what I am doing.  Several weeks ago, I added a 'new section' to one of my websites.

The original site has run out of space. The site's capacity (Typesetter) is huge (over 1 GB) but it is nearing capacity.

I added a new domain extension for the new section and put it on WordPress.

Above is a snapshot of the comments for the first post which will bring out an important point, so please keep reading.

Of almost 500 comments, 286 were sent to SPAM or Trash.

What You May Not Know About Comments

Most site builders allow comments and it is a good idea for you to allow comments.  Comments mean

'ENGAGEMENT" and search engines love to see engagement and consider it to be a signal that people like your content.

When search engines see that people like your content due to engagement, they will push it out to more people.

WARNING!

There are two things that you DO NOT WANT regarding comments.

#1: SPAMMY or offensive comment content

#2:  Links to offensive sites.

Content

I try to be a little forgiving regarding the content of a comment.  In other words, if it says something about the post, positive or negative, or asks a question and so on, which is followed by a SPAMMY sentence or link, I will probably approve it.  I am even more motivated to approve comments since the new section is new.  On the other hand, some of the comments that were sent to SPAM were simply offensive or blatant SPAM content.

Links

Comments are typically going to contain links and I am perfectly OK with that. That is not the way that I get backlinks or that I recommend, but still, it is a backlinking method.  Based on my knowledge, backlinks from comments, nowadays, have little to no value in the eyes of search engines.

But here is the important part, you need to check those links.  Not just the link or links in the comment, but also the ones in the signature. check each and every link.  If there is a link, check it.  If the link goes to a legitimate website, I am going to approve it.  In many cases, however, better than half the time, the links will go to illegitimate sites, making it necessary for me (and you) to send it to SPAM or Trash.

Depending on your site builder, you may also have an option to 'edit' comments.  If your comments are rare, it may be to your benefit to keep a  bad comment, but edit it, thus turning it into a good comment.  This is a choice that I do not recommend, but it is an option.

Conclusion:

Check your comments and check the links.  Good comments and good links will act as 'third party validation'.  As mentioned, this will help your site regarding search engines.  It will also help you to get MORE ENGAGEMENT from your visitors!

Content that gets engagement validates its value in the eyes of your readers.

In addition, your visitors are more likely to engage when they see that others are engaging. Comments can have a snowball effect when it comes to free traffic.

Backlinks are a perhaps lesser-known thing that search engines look at.  The more they see, the more important they consider your site.

TAKE ACTION!??

It is said that successful people do those things that others do not.  In my humble opinion, most of your competition and mine are NOT taking care of these little details.  In other words, these two simple tasks can help separate us from the rest!

So...take action!

The Entrepreneur!

Dobie and Joe were walking down the street.

Dobie is a Doberman and Joe is a Saint Bernard.

Going the other way is Marcos.

Marcos is a Lab and he is driving a truck that is loaded with logs.

Dobie and Joe, wave at Marcos.  Marcos waves back

and gives the horn a little toot.

"It was not long ago that Marcos found his passion," said Dobie.

"I remember," began Joe,

"He started out chasing sticks, and look at him now."

As always, an informative read George. I personally never place a link in any comment I make. I don't consider it good practice. So I'm unlikely to be impressed when others place links in comments to me ... except ... when it's from someone I 'know' well who has linked for an ethical reason I appreciate.

I agree that placing links in comments is not a good idea, and thanks to Terri, I find that it can be detrimental.  Thanks, Tom.

You definitely explained that well. Likes, comments and shares are important for website and social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest etc. All of this is social signals for search engines. This is how search engines determine if they want to add your content in their search engine. As you stated, you do have to recognize some comments will be spam, because people don't realize that by posting comments with links is them and the site owner will not approve it. Links in comments will hurt you if you're posting your links. So be careful about doing this. I personally never do this because I don't want the search engines to bury my content. You'll never get any traffic when you do this. So why do this? It's not beneficial at all.

Thank you, Terri, I agree.  I was aware that it was not a good option, but I was not aware that it was detrimental, and I appreciate that.
