Then-Rutgers second-year coach Greg Schiano, whose previous stops as an assistant included Penn State and Miami, warned his team not to look in the stands. As the seats seemingly stretched on for miles, players felt compelled to sneak a peak.
"It was me and 100,000 fans fifa coins there, screaming," said Clarence Pittman, who rushed for 104 yards. "I was stunned to be able to have that opportunity. It's a dream as a kid. As a player, you are not supposed to look in the stands, but they're sitting so high up you have no choice but to look. You're amazed by it."
As it did this week, Rutgers pumped noise in to its practices then to eliminate verbal communication. It is still the same piercing jet engine-like sound used in past years to prepare for games at Arkansas, Louisville or West Virginia, though none of those schools draws 100,000.
