A Matter of Leadership

A Matter of Leadership

This Is A Guest Author Post on A Matter of Leadership

There are many professions that are experiencing crisis as we continue to move forward in the postmodern age. A problem you hear very little about, however, is the impending crisis related to social work. Whether it is the political climate, a shift in society’s values, or a mere economic dilemma, is up for debate. Despite the controversy around the matter, there does seem to be some consensus on the solution. The field of social work is in desperate need of leadership and direction.

According to statements made during the World Congress of Social Work, the current leaders in the field, the ones possessing the experience and knowledge about the intricacies of the system, are soon to retire. Their exit will create a gap in the system that will become apparent by the year 2020. The nation must find a way to fill this gap before the repercussions are truly felt. There are already plenty of factors working against the profession as a whole. In addition to financial problems, there are the competing private companies that may undercut the role of human services, and there is a real decrease in the resources being made available despite the fact that the demand for these services is on the rise.

However, there are things that are working on the side of human services at this time as well. The job opportunities for people called to the profession are doing anything but shrinking even though the pay is not rising. The numbers are good in terms of calling people into the field. There are over 650,000 employees in social work as of 2010. The growth for new positions has also been projected to be around 20 percent, meaning that there is likely to be approximately 58,000 new positions to fill in the near future.

Part of the responsibility in nurturing this important aspect of society falls on the shoulders of educators in addition to voters. Students hoping to enter this profession must be adequately prepared for the realities of day-to-day pressures on the job instead of only being given the idealized version of the possibility. Students must be encouraged to get involved in professional organizations outside of the classroom as well so that they can begin to take the reigns of the system.
