Save The Ocean

I have always been a lover of the sea and have been an enthusiastic SCUBA diver since 1972. Having spent my early diving years in the cold and murky waters surrounding England it was a fantastic experience for me when I moved to live in Asia in 1975 and discovered the untold pleasure of diving in the crystal clear tropical waters of the pacific.

It is impossible to adequately describe the beauty that lies beneath the seas to anyone who has not personally experienced it. Even underwater photographs do not capture the full beauty of a coral reef.

Over the years however I have unfortunately witnessed first hand the continual pollution of the seas caused by the uncontrolled and irresponsible dumping of garbage in the ocean. One of the worst causes of the pollution is due to plastic items which of course do not decompose with time. The garbage has a devastating effect on coral reefs and not only kills the marine life but also numerous birds that live in the coastal regions or migrate there during certain times of the year.

I was reminded of the problems of ocean pollution recently when I watched a short video clip about Midway Island. I was so angered by the tragic scene shown in the video that I decided to write this blog article entitled "Save The Ocean" to help create awareness of the problem and hopefully encourage everyone to take some massive action to stop this destruction of our vital marine environment.

Most people are totally unaware that the problem of garbage in the sea has already reached such gigantic proportions. I have mentioned the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" to a lot of people recently and have found that nobody seems to have even heard about it. Have you heard about it? Why don't you leave a comment telling me what you know.

According to WIKEPEDIA , The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is a gyre of marine debris in the central North Pacific Ocean located roughly between 135°W to 155°W and 35°N and 42°N. The patch extends over an indeterminate area, with estimates ranging very widely depending on the degree of plastic concentration used to define the affected area.

The patch is characterized by exceptionally high concentrations of pelagic plastics, chemical sludge and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. Despite its size and density, the patch is not visible from satellite photography, since it consists primarily of suspended particulates in the upper water column. Since plastics break down to even smaller polymers, concentrations of submerged particles are not visible from space, nor do they appear as a continuous debris field. Instead, the patch is defined as an area in which the mass of plastic debris in the upper water column is significantly higher than average.

As I explained at the beginning of this blog my main purpose today is to just show folks how serious the situation in our oceans really is already and raise awareness to the fact that everyone needs to take responsibility for ensuring that it doesn't get worse by makijng sure that they are not the one littering.

YOUR TURN TO TAKE SOME ACTION  Now that you have been informed about this very dire situation I want to ask everyone who reads this article to also start a blog , do research into the ways we can try to clean up the sea and write articles on the subject just like this one. If you are prepared to do this please click on the "Contact Irish Jim" link in the header menu bar at the top of the page and I will help you get started, Let's flood the internet with the call to action to "Save The Ocean"

It is very surprising to me that some people that I have talked to don't understand how important fa healthy ocean is for our very existence on this earth Marine waters cover two-thirds of the surface of the Earth and are considered ecosystems because the plant life supports the animal life and vice-versa.. Marine ecosystems are very important for the overall health of both marine and terrestrial environments. According to the World Resource Center, coastal habitats alone account for approximately 1/3 of all marine biological productivity, and estuarine ecosystems (i.e., salt marshes, sea grasses, mangrove forests) are among the most productive regions on the planet. In addition, other marine ecosystems such as coral reefs, provide food and shelter to the highest levels of marine diversity in the world.

The following info graphics will help to demonstrate this subject better. The first shows how dependent we are on the ocean and the second demonstrates how much damage has been done already and forecasts when we will run out of supplies of certain commodities if nothing is done soon.
