Take A Break – You Deserve It !!
The Billy Fury Story
Best Known for the Hit Song Halfway To Paradise
I am sure there will be many people out there who have never heard of Billy Fury unless you were brought up in the 60′s and 70′s. Well he was my idol as a 16 year old teenager and I was lucky enough to have met him face to face and talk with him after I was at one of his concerts in 1961.
Well last night I decided to take a bit of time off from my online business and go to the threatre to see The Billy Fury Story … I am lost for words – absolutely mind blowing and brought back so many good memories !!
Billy Bury was born in the Dingle district of Liverpool. He was a very shy young man at the age of 19 (known as Ronnald Wycherley). He went to the Birkenhead Essoldo hoping to see Marty Wilde and show him some of his work. Very shortly after he arrived Larry Parnes pushed him onto the stage and that was the day he was named Billy Fury.
He was then taken to London where he got a record deal with Decca Records. In the month of February 1959 he got into the top twenty in the UK singing his own version of “Maybe Tomorrow/Gonna Type A Letter” – this was the first of 29 hit records and he sold more than any other artist at that time, including The Rolling Stone and he had more hit singles in the 60′s than The Beatles. This was just the beginning but he struck down with Rheumatic Fever which left him with a weak heart and he had to undergo major heart surgery.
By 1970 it had been four years since he last had a major hit but he was still a big star. Chris Raynor said “he was 6ft tall, handsome and a big star with a terrific voice ….but he was also very shy and quite a nervous performer.” Not a good combination. I remember seeing him in a film in 1972 (which was to be his last film) portraying himself (Stormy Tempest) with David Essex, Ringo Star and Keith Moon and the name of the film of “That’ll Be The Day”.
Then came the news that Billy had to retire in 1977 due to ill health. The band had split up and gone their own way and then in 1982 they were going to have a comeback and get together but Billy’s long term partner Lisa had said that he just wasn’t well enough to go ahead with it. Then came the devastating news that Billy Fury passed away on 28th January 1983. Billy band ‘The Tornados’ remain his longest serving band and Colin Gold joined them as the lead singer (Billy Fury) and what a fantastic group they are.
