“On this Veterans Day, let us remember the service of our veterans, and let us renew our national promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free.” - Dan Lipinski

The past, present, and future of the United States is a constant reminder of the ultimate sacrifices of its Armed Forces. I come from a military family which have many who have serve in the various branches of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines as well as the Coast Guard. My father, all of his brothers, and other uncles and cousins of mine served in the different branches of the military, so I found it fitting for me to join the military right after high school. I served in the U.S. Air Force from June 1984 to February 1990 and have been stationed at Scott AFB, Illinois, Osan Air Base, South Korea, and Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. I’ve also been blessed to travel around the world to other military installations. And while I’ve had a great time in the military like my days as part of the Scott AFB Honor Guard and Precision Drill Teams, this day I have to reflect on the many friends and fellow military members who have died protecting our country’s borders as well as defending our nation’s security overseas. Many people take our country’s safety for granted. If it weren’t for those who volunteered to give their lives for the sake of our many freedoms, we would have much more chaos in our own country. I’m very proud to be a U.S. veteran, and there’s nothing that can replace the memories I hold dear to my heart during my time of service.

To me, Veteran’s Day is much more than what store has the best sales, the many BBQ’s and parties people will attend, and having a meaningless day off from work. If you’ve never worn a U.S. military uniform, you might not have any idea what it mentally takes to walk day-to-day in our shoes. When you decide to take the military oath to “defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic”, you’ve made a 24-hour, 7-day a week commitment to protect our country, families, friends, businesses, and properties at all costs. Everyone isn’t cut out to be a U.S. service member. Our military is the most powerful fighting force in the world by far, and I’m honored to have served this country with the highest esteem. So the next time you see a U.S. veteran, thank them for volunteering to serve and protect you and your family. That’s the job of a military person, to serve and protect our citizens and country proudly. And though I’m no longer in “the service”, I still give thanks to those who continue to allow me and my family to live freely. I will never take this civil right for granted. Thank-you to all U.S. military members, active, deceased, and veterans for your service. We have a unique bond that can never be broken!
