Below is Anna, one of four "hosts" on one of my YT channels.
Her videos begin with:
Name, channel name, and brief overview of what is about to follow.
For example: I am Anna, withThe Brief Is HERE, today, I wlll be sharing how to find any grocery store that is near you, fast.
Next is Professor Spellwick, followed by Baby Donald.
They are the two narrators for "Splintered Stories".
Splintered stories are spinoffs of well know stories, fables, fairy tales, Bible stories, etc. but with a twist.
For example:
In one story, Baby Donald is a building inspector that "helps" the three little pigs.
I share the above, because your 'characters' can do so much to 'brand" your channel, which can boost your channel growth.
So let's get into:
WHY this can help, then
HOW to utilize character branding.
Why Character Branding Matters
Establishing distinct personalities for your hosts builds an emotional connection with your audience that a generic narrator cannot replicate. By creating recognizable "brands" like Anna, Professor Spellwick, or Baby Donald, you foster viewer loyalty and create a consistent experience, making your channel feel like a familiar destination rather than just a collection of random videos.
How to Implement Character Branding
To effectively utilize characters for your own channel, follow this structured approach:
- Define Unique Archetypes: Assign each host a specific persona (e.g., the helpful guide, the eccentric expert, or the playful troublemaker) and ensure their vocabulary and tone match that identity.
- Create Signature Openers: As demonstrated with Anna, give each character a consistent introduction. This provides "audio-visual cues" that allow returning viewers to instantly recognize who is leading the segment.
- Align Content to Character: Match the host’s personality to the subject matter. A "building inspector" persona, for example, adds natural humor and thematic weight to a twisted retelling of The Three Little Pigs.
- Maintain Consistent Stakes: Ensure your characters have distinct motivations or goals within the narrative. This keeps the audience engaged in their specific arc, even if the underlying story is a familiar classic.
A free tool for creating your characters and videos is Powtoon. The free version is amazing and has
character creation and character building as an option.
Utilizing Powtoon for Character Production
You don't need a professional animation studio to establish your characters. Powtoon is an excellent tool for creators looking to visualize their hosts without needing advanced motion graphics skills.
The Powtoon Workflow
- Asset Library: Utilize Powtoon’s pre-built character sets. You can often find archetypes that mirror your "hosts" (e.g., an office worker for a building inspector or a polished presenter for Anna).
- Consistency: Because you use the same assets for each video, your characters remain visually consistent, which reinforces your branding over time.
- The "Free Version" Strategy:
- Limits: The free plan allows for exports up to 3 minutes long.
- The Watermark: Yes, a watermark will appear. For emerging channels, this is acceptable. Audiences care far more about the "twist" in your story and the personality of the host than they do about a small logo in the corner.
- Scaling: Once your channel gains traction, you can move to a paid tier to remove the watermark; however, do not let the watermark prevent you from starting today.
Production Tip
If your script is longer than 3 minutes, simply split your Story into a two-part series. This actually helps with your YouTube algorithm, as it encourages viewers to click through to watch the conclusion, increasing your channel's session time.
DO NOT be concerned about the watermark. It is not a big deal, the big deal is that you can create free videos with consistent brand building characters that will grow your channel.
Thank you for reading.
Much success,
George Pierce
PS. By giving your viewers a consistent familiar character that they can relate to, they become comfortable, almost immediately, so they RETURN. This strategy is simple, easy, and free, and it works, for both kids and adults, so give it a try.
