Hi, I am George Pierce, this post is about naming your online business. Naming your online business is a big deal. Finding the perfect name is important and the right name can and will benefit your business, but there are more steps to the process, and they are just as important.
#1 Finding the right name
Finding the perfect name is easier than ever, especially with AI. Search for 'free business name generator', choose one, describe your business, and you will almost instantly have dozens of business name choices. Surprisingly good choices, if not, great choices.
#2 Is the name already taken?
There are several searches that you can make and that you want to make, before finalizing your choice.
- Entity name protects you at a state level (search for ~ business name search and your state) Your state should have a "search tool", type in the prospective name of your business.
- Trademark protects you at a federal level (go to US Patent Office and Trademarks) Type in your prospective name to search the database.
- Domain name protects your business website address (go to Who Is) Type in your prospective name.
You should also do a social media search and a Google search.
Finding a name that is NOT already taken is not just a wise business move, it is a smart legal move as well.
True story: A local business built an awesome arcade, game, miniature golf, batting cages, and more. The name of their business was "The Play Station". The name was already taken!
That was an example of a major OOPS, but even a totally free online business is still going to involve your time and effort. And when it takes off is not the time to find out that the name is taken.
