A Southern Breakfast

A Southern Breakfast

As a person who was raised in the South there are a lot of events, circumstances and experiences I would love to forget. As a matter of fact until something triggers some of those experiences they don’t come to mind. My philosophy is that while you have to know where you came from in order to understand where you are and where you are going you haphazardly drift through life without clear direction.

It is by no means am I alluding to the fact that all growing days in the South was bad or negative;there was plenty of that however not all days were bad.

One of the most positive things I remember growing up as a child in my great-grandmother’s house was Breakfast.

There is a realty in this day and time that eating breakfast maybe a luxury for thousands upon thousands of children. With varying reasons as to why so many children don’t eat breakfast the truth remains that many just don’t have the experience.

I vividly remember the most pronounced scents that would cause my eyes to pop open many days without having to be called. My great-grandmother survived on meager means but somehow she managed constant with this particular meal.

One thing she stressed was that breakfast was the most important meal of the day and for me it was, but then again for me every meal was important; LOL.

A typical breakfast was grits, bacon, eggs, homemade biscuit or a slice of oven toast with butter. To top it all was a cup of coffee made in the old tin percolator. The aroma from that coffee almost caused salivation.

Maxwell house was the coffee of choice at that time. This was the beginning of me acquiring a taste for coffee.

When carnation or pet can milk was added with sugar coffee neither breakfast got any better than this.

Now some fifty five years later I get to take breakfast to another level with “The Healthy Coffee” to benefit homeless women at Cedar Haven. Life is always evolving.

The Ceramic god and Gano Excel

The Ceramic god and Gano Excel

While it is over cast and cloudy at least it has finally stop raining here in the part of Florida in which I live. The last few days seems like the heavens had an overflow that needed to be released on to the earth. The grounds at Cedar Haven definitely benefits from the rain. Rain is good though.

The rainy days caused me to maintain a slower pace of which I had the opportunity to pay attention to something I may have otherwise missed. Now this may seem a little odd to be doing a PR on but it’s true. During a couple of the days of tremendous rainfall I decided to sleep in a tad bit longer than usual. Upon rising each one of those days I went to the bathroom like clockwork. Now you may ask why it that a necessary detail to reveal? I am glad you asked.

In 1997 the medical community deemed it necessary that the left lobe of my Thyroid be removed and spewed out a diagnosis of Hashimotos Disease. The Thyroid is ESSENTIAL to the body it affects everything. Of course I was nowhere nearly as educated then as I needed to be or as I am now about the Thyroid and it’s function. Hind sight 20/20 right? Nonetheless one of the adverse effects of a sluggish Thyroid is a sluggish bowel.

There would be times when going to the bathroom twice a week was a grand stand event.

Well since becoming a Distributor and an Affiliate in Gano Excel with the help of Mr. and Mrs. James Lockett I can proudly say that drinking the Gano Healthy Coffee I visited the ceramic god (the toilet) every morning and some days twice a day.

Thank God for the rain, the ceramic god, and of course Gano Excel “The Healthy Coffee. True story by yours truly LaVerne Floyd Mitchell - Co Founder Cedar Haven.

Gano Excel Healthy Coffee can change your life and assist in changing the lives of homeless women at Cedar Haven Transitional House for homeless women.

Introduction to LaVerne

n an odd kind of way, it seems like avenues and paths that seemed feasible for me to pursue in the past all had an underlying meaning. How did the choices I made bring me to where I am today? I am glad you asked.  Most of the years of my active employment there was a dream lodged deep in my heart. This dream was to become an entrepreneur. The internet had not gained its popularity at that time. At that time the research required to pursue the entrepreneurial path was all manual labor.

At one point it seemed like there was enough research and statistical data gathered by the man whom I was married and I to start a business.  By following all the instructions from our lending institution, we acquired a home equity line of credit and the dream became a reality.

On August 9, 1997, the doors of Miz L’s Ladies Fashions opened in its first location.  I was one happy camper to say the least.  That day was one of the best days of my life.  Imagine the first African American female to open a real viable business locally. This was in an area where less than 2% of the total business owners are African American. You can’t imagine how this made me feel.

Having a call of God on my life, and this retail business seemed to fit like a hand in a glove.  As days, weeks, months, and years passed one thing that was clearly obvious was that the majority of the women  who came in  were either experiencing or had already experienced some kind of over-whelming life situation.

Listening to the women, praying with them and giving them encouragement came very natural to me.  The sense of reward in dealing with the women on a personal and spiritual level everyday was priceless to me. To see women come in downtrodden, leaving with a smile on their face, and filled with a renewed hope for life was priceless.  Every coin bears two sides and the other side of the coin for Miz L’s is that women were doing better but the sales were not increasing.

The stagnate sales created a need for re-accessing the way business was being run. The bottom line was that I was allowing my human side, taking care of people I met to cost me.  Too much liberty spent helping others was causing the business side to suffer.  After recognizing this problem, a decision was made. This decision was to move the business to another location.

The new location was better, it was in a strip mall this was in the year 2000. A choice was made with the move.   I would curtail much of the personal interaction with the women and focus on business. That did work to a degree however by the time it looked like things were turning around devastation hit and we were faced with 911. America came to a screeching halt. Our pockets were not deep enough to survive.  As a result, Miz L’s was closed. ©LaVerne Mitchell November 10, 2014.7:00 PM EDT Cedar Haven shelter for homeless women

Did You Know?

Did you know that thousands of people are still becoming homeless every day and that a large percentage of those people are women? According to The State of Homelessness in America organization report that at a point in time in January 2012, 633,782 people were experiencing homelessness.

In my 3X5 Island home town we are definitely have seen and are continuing to see an increase of homeless women. Jacksonville Florida is our neighboring city and according to a news special a couple years ago “on any given day there’s 832 women on the street.” Yes many of the homeless women are mothers with children however there is an alarming rate of single homeless women on the horizon as well.

Homelessness can be a sensitive topic for some, there are those individuals who have an antiquated mindset whenever they hear the word “homeless” that it’s about a man who does not want to work or a man who has just checked out of life.

Real talk in living color I am here to tell you that is far from the truth and reality of what’s happening. There are real factors that attribute to people becoming homeless, not to bore you with a lot of statistical data and facts however for the sake of all being able to relate the economics. Simply put thousands of people just do not have the financial means to keep up with the rising cost to live. Enough said on the larger scale allow me enlightened you from the niche of homelessness I am most familiar…, single homeless women.

Until November 2013 the single homeless women’s plight was quite bleak with not only having to worry about where she was going to live, but in many cases how she was going to live especially if she had any kind of medical situation. The health care bill was a huge asset to the single homeless women. The health care bill was only a small nugget in solving the single homeless women’s condition. Always Heart Breaking

While it is an absolutely gorgeous day it is extremely hot here in Florida today. A young woman calls she slept on the beach last night not for pleasure mind you but out of necessity. The woman is homeless. These are frequent calls that I along with the Director of Cedar Haven receives on an ongoing basis and it is always so heartbreaking. It's heartbreaking 1. Because that's a human being that life has happened to for whatever reason and there seems to be not solution 2. It's heartbreaking because it is happening far too often in the land of the free and the home of the brave3. It's heartbreaking because facilities are very limited at least in our area and 4. It’s heartbreaking because Cedar Haven our facility is at capacity with a waiting list.

Initially I thought I was going to write about a pressing need for utility funds but the matter of this young woman's plight is weighing in heavy on me.

#lavernefloydmitchell  is feeling a certain kind of way right now.  You can learn more about what I do and those I help

Excited To Be Blogging First One!

# Since I am not only new to this site but also the whole network marketing world it may be best that I simply share a little bit about myself and hopefully this is the right place to do so.

In 2011 one of the most unplanned events occurred in my life. God saw fit that I be a vital part for the creation and development of the first Transitional Houses for Single homeless women in my town. It seems God gets a kick out of placing me in unchartered territory. A transitional house was no where on my radar but here it is almost four years later and over thirty women lives have been touched. Of course all thirty women's lives have not been transformed because a real truth  is that everybody is not ready for change. The name of the house is Cedar Haven we do have a FB page .

More information is on the current websites www.womenofpowerinc.org  and www.lavernemitchellministires.org . As a faith based house we do not receive any governmental funds.
