A Bright and Prosperous New Year.

How has 2013 been for you? Well here's what I wish for you in 2014!

You take a little seed, plant it, water it, and fertilize it for a whole year, and nothing happens.

The second year you water it and fertilize it, and nothing happens.

The third year you water it and fertilize it, and nothing happens. How discouraging this becomes!

The fourth year you water it and fertilize it, and nothing happens. This is very frustrating.

The fifth year you continue to water and fertilize the seed and then… sometime during the year, the Chinese bamboo tree sprouts and grows 90 feet in six weeks.

*********

It intrigued the disciples that the Master who lived so simply would not condemn his wealthy followers. “It is rare but not impossible for someone to be rich and holy,” he said one day.

“How”?

“When money has the effect on his heart that the shadow of that bamboo has on the courtyard”.

The disciples turned to watch the bamboo’s shadow sweep the courtyard without stirring a single particle of dust.

While thanking each and everyone of you for the support and encouragement you have given me I wish you all a Bright and Prosperous New Year.

The Homeless man

It was a cold winter's day that Sunday...

The parking lot to the church was filling up quickly. I noticed as I got out of
my car that fellow church members were whispering among themselves as they
walked to the church. As I got closer, I saw a man leaned up against the wall
outside the church. He was almost lying down as if he was asleep.

He had on a long trench coat that was almost in shreds, and a hat topped his
head, pulled down so you could not see his face. He wore shoes that looked 30
years old, too small for his feet, with holes all over them. His toes stuck
out.

I assumed this man was homeless and asleep, so I walked on by through the doors
of the church. We all gathered for fellowship for a few minutes, and someone
brought up the man lying outside. People snickered and gossiped, but no one
bothered to ask him to come in, including me.

A few moments later, church began. We all waited for the preacher to take his
place and to give us the Word, when the doors to the church opened. In came the
homeless man walking down the aisle with his head down.

People gasped and whispered and made faces. He made his way down the aisle and
up onto the pulpit. He took off his hat and coat.

My heart sank.

There stood our preacher... he was the "homeless man."

No one said a word.

The preacher took his Bible and laid it on the stand...

"Folks, I don't think I have to tell you what I am preaching about
today."

Know Jesus with the mind -
the study of the Catechism: know Jesus with the heart - in prayer, in dialogue
with Him. This helps us a good bit, but it is not enough. There is a third way
to know Jesus: it is by following Him. Go with Him, walk with Him. To go, to
walk along the streets, journeying is to know Jesus in the language of action.

I Will Keep The Faith

I will Keep The Faith

(Its a bit long but makes a wonderful read! dont skip it)
"Let me explain the problem science has with Jesus Christ." The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class and then asks one of his new students to stand.
"You're a Christian, aren't you, son?" "Yes sir," the student says. "So you believe in God?" "Absolutely."
"Is God good?" "Sure! God's good, and I will Keep The Faith."
"Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?" "Yes."
"Are you good or evil?" "The Bible says I'm evil."
The professor grins knowingly. "Aha! The Bible!" He considers for a moment. "Here's one for you. Let's say there's a sick person over here and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help them? Would you try?"
"Yes sir, I would." "So you're good...!" "I wouldn't say that."
"But why not say that? You'd help a sick and maimed person if you could. Most of us would if we could. But God doesn't." The student does not answer, so the professor continues. "He doesn't, does he? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him. How is this Jesus good? Hmmm? Can you answer that one?"
The student remains silent. "No, you can't, can you?" the professor says. He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student time to relax.
"Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?" "Er... Yes," the student says.
"Is Satan good?" The student doesn't hesitate on this one. "No."
"Then where does Satan come from?" The student falters. "From... God..." That's right. God made Satan, didn't he? Tell me, son. Is there evil in this world?" "Yes, sir." "Evil's everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything correct?"
"Yes." "So who created evil?" Again, the student has no answer. "Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness. All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?" The student squirms on his feet. "Yes."
"So who created them?" The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question, "Who created them? " There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace in front of the classroom. The class is mesmerized.
"Tell me," he continues. "Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?" The student's voice betrays him and cracks. "Yes, professor. I do."
The old man stops pacing. "Science says you have five senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?" "No sir. I've never seen Him."
"Then tell us if you've ever heard your Jesus?" "No, sir. I have not."
"Have you ever felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelt your Jesus? Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter." "No, sir, I'm afraid I haven't."
"Yet you still believe in him?" "Yes."
"According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn't exist. What do you say to that son?" "Nothing," the student replies. "I only have my faith."
"Yes, faith," the professor repeats. "And that is the problem science has with God. There is no evidence, only faith."
The student stands quietly for a moment, before asking a question of his own. "Professor, is there such thing as heat?" "Yes," the professor replies. "There's heat." "And is there such a thing as cold?" "Yes, son, there's cold too." "No sir, there isn't."
The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room suddenly becomes very quiet. The student begins to explain. "You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don't have anything called 'cold'. We can hit 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than - 458 degrees. You see, sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it."
Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding like a hammer. "What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?" "Yes," the professor replies without hesitation. "What is night if it isn't darkness?" "You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light... but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? That's the meaning we use to define the word. In reality, darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?" The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him. This will be a good semester.
"So what point are you making, young man?" "Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with and so your conclusion must also be flawed." The professor's face cannot hide his surprise this time. "Flawed? Can you explain how?"
"You are working on the premise of duality," the student explains. "You argue that there is life and then there's death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it. Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?"
"If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes, of course I do."
"Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?" The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes where the argument is going. A very good semester indeed.
"Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?"
The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion has subsided. "To continue the point you were making earlier, let me give you an example of what I mean?" The student looks around the room.
"Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the professor's brain?" The class breaks out into laughter. "Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor's brain, felt the professor's brain, touched or smelt the professor's brain? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with all due respect, sir." So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures, sir?"
Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face unreadable. Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers. "I guess you'll have to take them on faith."

Take back your life. Our program shows you how!

The thing he valued most

It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man who used to live next door. College, girls, career, life

itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit
of his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to
think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was
working on his future, and nothing could stop him.
Over the phone, his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The
funeral is Wednesday." Memories flashed through his mind like an old
newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days. "Jack, did you
hear me?" "Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since
I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,"
Jack said. "Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how
you were doing. He'd reminisce about the many days you spent over 'his side of
the fence' as he put it," Mom told him. "I loved that old house he
lived in," Jack said. "You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr.
Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life,"
she said. "He's the one who taught me carpentry," he said. "I
wouldn't be in this business if it weren't for him. He spent a lot of time
teaching me things he thought were important...Mom, I'll be there for the
funeral," Jack said.

As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his
hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of
his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the
old house next door one more time. Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a
moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space
and time. The house was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories.

Every picture, every piece of furniture....Jack stopped suddenly. "What's
wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked. "The box is gone," he said.
"What box? " Mom asked. "There was a small gold box that he kept
locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was
inside. All he'd ever tell me was 'the thing I value most,'" Jack said. It
was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except
for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it. "Now
I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said. "I better
get some sleep. I have an early flight home, Mom."

It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died. Returning home from work one
day Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. "Signature required on a
package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within the next
three days," the note read.

Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. The small box was old and looked
like it had been mailed a hundred years ago. The handwriting was difficult to
read, but the return address caught his attention."Mr. Harold Belser"
it read.
Jack took the box out to his car and ripped open the package. There inside was
the gold box and an envelope. Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside.
"Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett.
It's the thing I valued most in my life." A small key was taped to the
letter. His heart racing, as tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked
the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch. Running his
fingers slowly over the finely etched casing, he unlatched the cover. Inside he
found these words engraved: "Jack, Thanks for your time! Harold
Belser."
"The thing he valued most...was...my time." Jack held the watch for a
few minutes, then called his office and cleared his appointments for the next
two days. "Why?" Janet, his assistant asked. "I need some time
to spend with my son," he said. "Oh, by the way, Janet...thanks for
your time!"

Thank you all for your time!!

Spiritual Story by Anthony de Mello

The great Buddhist saint Nagarjuna moved around naked except for a loincloth and, incongruously, a golden begging bowl gifted to him by the King, who was his disciple.

One night he was about to lie down to sleep among the ruins of an ancient monastery when he noticed a thief lurking behind one of the columns. "Here, take this," said Nagarjuna, holding the begging bowl. "That way you won't disturb me once I have fallen asleep."

The thief eagerly grabbed the bowl and made off -- only to return the next morning with the bowl and a request: "When you gave away this bowl so freely last night, you made me feel very poor. Teach me how to acquire the riches that make this kind of lighthearted detachment possible."

Spiritual Story by Anthony de Mello

A priest walked into a pub, indignant to find so many of his parishioners there. He rounded them up and shepherded them into the church. The he solemnly said, "All those who want to go to heaven, step over here to the left." Everyone stepped over except one man, who stubbornly stood his ground.

The priest looked at him firecely and said, "Don't you want to go to heaven?" "No," said the man.

"Do you mean to stand there and tell me you don't want to go to heaven when you die?"

"Of course I want to go to heaven when I die. I thought you were going now!"

Ordinary Just Isn't Enough

For some time I've had a church member provide me with a rose boutonniere to pin on the lapel of my suit every Sunday. Because I always got a flower on Sunday morning, I really did not think much of it. It was a nice gesture that became routine.
One Sunday, however, what I considered ordinary became very special. As I was leaving the Sunday service a young man approached and said, "Sir, what are you going to do with your flower?" At first I did not know what he was talking about, but then I understood. I said, "Do you mean this?" as I pointed to the rose pinned to my coat. He said, "Yes sir. I would like it if you are just going to throw it away." The little boy said, "Sir, I'm going to give it to my granny. My mother and father got divorced last year. I was living with my mother, but I could not stay, so she sent me to live with my grandmother. She has been so good to me that I want to give that pretty flower to her for loving me."
When the little boy finished I could hardly speak. My eyes filled with tears and I knew I had been touched in the depths of my soul. I reached up and unpinned my flower. With the flower in my hand, I looked at the boy and said, "Son, that is the nicest thing I have ever heard, but you can't have this flower because it's not enough. If you'll look in front of the pulpit, you'll see a big bouquet of flowers. Different families buy them for the church each week. Please take those flowers to your granny because she deserves the very best." If I hadn't been touched enough already, he made one last statement and I will always cherish it.
He said, "What a wonderful day! I asked for one flower but got a beautiful bouquet."

A Perfect Picture of Peace

A Perfect Picture of Peace
Free Home Buciness Opportunity, Pricebenders, Penny Auctions,

There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures.

But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest - in perfect peace.

The king chose the second picture.

"Paid in full with one glass of milk"

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water! She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it so slowly, and then asked, How much do I owe you?"

You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."

He said ... "Then I thank you from my heart."

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Many year's later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.

Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.

Dressed in his doctor's gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once.

He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won.

Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words ...

"Paid in full with one glass of milk"

A young man, a student in one of the universities, was one day taking a walk with a professor, who was commonly called the students' friend for his kindness to those who waited on his instructions.

As they went along, they saw lying in the path a pair of old shoes, which were supposed to belong to a poor man who was working in a field close by, and who had nearly finished his day's work . . .

Student turned to the professor, saying: "Let us play the man a trick:

we will hide his shoes, and hide ourselves behind those bushes, and wait to see his perplexity when he cannot find them ..."

"My young friend," answered the professor, "We should never amuse ourselves at the expense of the poor . . . But you are rich, and may give yourself a much greater pleasure by means of this poor man.

Put a coin in each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch how this affects him." Visit: The student did so and they both placed themselves behind the bushes close by. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes . . .

While putting on his coat he slipped his foot into one of his shoes, but feeling something hard, he stooped down to feel what it was, and found the coin. Astonishment and wonder were seen upon his countenance.

He gazed upon the coin, turned it around and looked at it again and again.

He then looked around him on all sides, but no person was to be seen. He now put the money into his pocket, and proceeded to put on the other shoe; but his surprise was doubled on finding the other coin . . .

His feelings overcame him . . . he fell upon his knees, looked up to heaven and uttered aloud a fervent thanksgiving in which he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread, whom this timely bounty, from some unknown hand, would save from perishing . . .

The student stood there deeply affected, and his eyes filled with tears.

"Now," said the professor, are you not much better pleased than if you had played your intended trick?"

The youth replied, "You have taught me a lesson which I will never forget. .. I feel now the truth of these words, which I never understood before: "It's more blessed to give than to receive."

... May He be the answer to whatever your prayer is and to all those who seek His face. HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

They wont let me in

What use is a fine house (of God) if you haven’t got a tolerable planet to put it on? — Henry David Thoreau –

It was a beautiful Sunday morning. People were filling the church to its full capacity! As they entered, each were given a bulletin filled with announcements, topic of today's sermon, what songs they would sing and who to pray for. At the end of the line stood an older man. His clothes were filthy and you could tell that he had not bathed in days. His face was covered with whiskers, for he had not shaved for a very long time. When he reached the usher, he removed his tattered old brown hat in respect. His hair was long, dirty, and a tangled mess. He had no shoes on his feet, and wore only soiled black socks to cover the sores upon his feet. The Usher looked at him turning up his nose at the old man and said, "Uh, I'm sorry sir, but I'm afraid we can't let you in. You will distract the congregation and we don't allow anyone to disrupt our service. I'm afraid you'll have to leave."

The old man looked down at himself and with a puzzled look on his face, he placed his old brown hat back upon his head and turned to leave. He was sad as he loved to hear the choir sing praises to the Lord. He loved to watch the little children get up in front of the church to sing their little songs. He carried in his pocket a small worn out Bible and loved to see if the minister preached a passage from the Bible that he had underlined. But he was respectful, and didn't want to cause any commotion, so he hung down his head and walked back down the steps of the big brick church. He sat down on the brick wall near the edge of the church yard and strained to listen through closed doors and windows to the singing going on in the church. Oh how he wished he could be inside with all the others.

A few minutes had passed by when all of a sudden a younger man came up behind him and sat down near him. He asked the old man what he was doing? He answered, "I was going to go to church today, but they thought I was to filthy, my clothes to old and worn, and they were afraid I would disrupt their service. Sorry, I didn't introduce myself. My name is George." The two men shook hands, and George couldn't help but notice that this man had long hair like his. He wore a piece of cloth draped over his body tied with a royal purple sash. He had sandals on his feet, now covered with dust and dirt. The stranger touched George's shoulder, and said: "George, don't feel bad because they won't let you in. My name is Jesus, and I've been trying to get into this same church for years -- they won't let me in either."

Brother Hammer served as the chairman. The other members of the tool belt informed him that he must leave, because he was too noisy. But brother Hammer said, "If I have to leave this carpenter's shop, then brother Gimlet must go too. He's insignificant and makes a very small impression." (A gimlet is a small tool with a screw point, grooved shank, and a cross handle for boring holes).

Little brother Gimlet arose and said, "All right, but brother Screwdriver must go also. You have to turn him around and around to get anywhere with him."

Brother Screwdriver turned to the other tools in the belt and said, "If you wish, I will go, but brother Plane must leave too. All of his work is on the surface; there's no depth to what he does."

To this brother Plane leveled his terse reply, "Well, then, brother Saw will have to depart too. The changes he proposes always cut too deep."

Brother Saw complained, saying, "Brother Ruler will have to withdraw if I leave, for he's always measuring other folks as though he were the only one who is right."

Brother Ruler then surveyed the group and said, "Brother Sandpaper doesn't belong here either. He's rougher than he ought to be, and is always rubbing people the wrong way."

In the midst of the discussion, the Carpenter of Nazareth walked in. He had come to perform his day's work. He put on His tool belt and went to the workbench to make a pulpit. He employed the ruler, the saw, the plane, the hammer, the gimlet, the screwdriver, the sandpaper, and all the other tools. When the day's work was over, the pulpit was finished, and the carpenter went home. All the accusations against each of these tools were absolutely true, yet the carpenter used every one of them. No matter which tool He use, no other tool could have done the work better.

Angels and Ice Cream

This is an excerpt from the new book Thrift Store Graces: Finding God’s Gifts in the Midst of the Mess by Jane Knuth.

Thrift Store Graces bookOne day a father and his six small children troop single file into the thrift store. The tops of the little ones’ heads are staggered at four inch intervals of height, like stair steps. At first, we clerks exchange glances, doubting whether one lone man is sufficient to keep twelve little hands off the breakables, but we needn’t have worried. The children follow along behind him to the back of the store and wait patiently while he begins searching the clothing for their sizes.

Watching this scene, an elderly gentleman shopper hands our cashier a ten and tells her, “Whatever that father buys, use this to pay for it.” Then he leaves.

A few minutes later, when the family comes up to the cash register and Joan totals up the sale, she tells the father his purchase is not only covered but there is $1.50 left over. Dad looks at us in surprise and then at his children and says, “Come on, kids, let’s get another shirt for each of you.” They are all for that, and the orderly line returns to the clothing racks.

This is the point in the story where one begins to believe seriously in angels.

A woman customer, overhearing, whispers to our cashier that she would like to cover whatever else the father decides to purchase.

When the family returns to the checkout and finds that their additional clothing is also free, the father looks momentarily incredulous. But then a huge smile breaks over his face. “Kids,” he says to them, “we’re going for ice cream!”

When I tell people this story, many of them are as delighted with it as I am, but curiously, some people don’t like it at all. One opinion out there says: That father should have saved his money. Spending it on something as frivolous as ice cream is a waste of the gift he was given.

Hmm. Okay, that’s logical.

But at the time it happened, that’s not how I saw it at all.

I saw an older gentleman who was touched by God to purchase the clothing this family needed. I saw a father who, at first, took this gift as a sign that God wanted him to buy more clothing for his children. But on the occasion of the second gift, I saw a father who was absolutely sure that God wanted the children to have ice cream, and it had taken two angels to get the message through.

house“We’re all just walking each other home.” Ram Dass

What I like about this saying is how it suggests we’re on a journey together towards warmth and safety and that we have a mutual obligation to help each other get there.
Don’t get me wrong – I can admire rugged individualism and I think our individual efforts are very important but I also believe that “no man is an island, entire unto himself.”
We are social creatures and have a mutual responsibility to help one another along the way. It’s also, in general, much more fun to travel with others than to be alone on the road.
I take this opportunity to thank all those people who have helped to bring me safely to this place and time. I hope and pray that I will continue to have your assistance as I continue on the trail and I ask God to help me be generous in helping others get along.
I’ll see you at home.

Crossing the Water

Crossing the Water
By Sri Ramakrishna.

A farmer's daughter duty was to carry fresh milk to customers in various villages had, one of whom was a priest. To reach his house, the milkmaid had to cross a good-sized stream. People crossed it by a sort of ferry raft, for a small fee.

One day the priest, who performed worship daily with the offering to God of fresh milk, finding it arrived very late, scolded the poor woman. "What can I do?" she said, "I start out early from my house, but I have to wait a long time for the boatman to come."

Then the priest said (pretending to be serious), "What! People have even walked across the ocean by repeating the name of God, and you can't cross this little river?" This milkmaid took him very seriously. From then on she brought the priest's milk punctually every morning. He became curious about it and asked her how it was that she was never late anymore.

"I cross the river repeating the name of the Lord," she replied, "just as you told me to do, without waiting for the ferry." The priest didn't believe her, and asked, "Can you show me this, how you cross the river on foot?" So they went together to the water and the milkmaid began to walk over it. Looking back, the woman saw that the priest had started to follow her and was floundering in the water.

"Sir!" she cried, "You are uttering the name of God, yet all the while you are holding up your clothes from getting wet. That is not trusting in God!"

Reflection Questions
  • Which psychic or spiritual experiences do you want to have that you have not yet had? Why?

  • How does the woman apply the Law of Attraction?

  • How is the Law of Attraction applied to the man?

  • What is one limiting belief you have that is keeping you from reaching your greatest potential?

  • What is one aspect of your life that you are committed to with every part of your being?

Trusting in the Universe is crucial for the Law of Attraction to work for you just like it did for the girl.

Remember Jesus' instruction: 'Believe in God, Believe also in me'

You will need people like the boatman to assist you in achieving your dreams.

A woman once came to Gandhi and asked him to please tell her son to give up eating sugar. Gandhi asked the woman to bring the boy back in a week. Exactly one week later the woman returned, and Gandhi said to the boy, “Please give up eating sugar.” The woman thanked the Mahatma, and, as she turned to go, asked him why he had not said those words a week ago.”

Gandhi replied, “Because a week ago, I had not given up eating sugar.”

As I stepped out of the shower, I heard someone in my kitchen downstairs.  Knowing that my wife was out, I grabbed my 1903 heirloom rifle – which no longer works – and crept downstairs, forgetting the fact that I was in my birthday suit.

I came around the corner with the gun raised, only to find my wife loading the dishwasher.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“I thought I heard an intruder.  I came down to scare him”.

Scanning the contours of my soapy, naked body, she mumbled.

“You didn’t  need the gun.”

Life's like that!!

A Week Of Gratitude – Smell

Smell

I’ve already dealt with this in a previous post, Aromatic Memories, so here I’ll choose five different smells for which I am grateful:

  1. As regular readers of this blog will know, I am a confirmed “tea man” and I only drink coffee a few times a year.  And yet, the smell of ground coffee is totally compelling.  If coffee tasted anywhere near as good as it smells, I’d be Starbucks’ biggest fan.
  2. Many years ago, in order to while away a wet afternoon, my parents, sister and I took a tour of the Bushmills Irish Whiskey distillery on the North Antrim coast. At some point they brought us into the warehouse where the whiskey was aging in oak casks.  About 10% of the liquor evaporates during the aging process and this portion is known as “the angels’ share.”  All I know is that I could have stood there until I collapsed.
  3. I love the smell of curry, especially Japanese “House” curry.  I was making some recently for myself when another member of the community popped out of his room to find out where the awful stink was coming from.  No accounting for taste, is there?
  4. Conscious that this is my second reference to alcohol, I nonetheless want to state that the aroma of calvados [French apple brandy] warming in a balloon glass is glorious beyond words.
  5. The sea-weedy ozone aroma of a beach as you walk along it always smells just right.

What aromas are you grateful for today?

Five (surprising) Places to Find God

Five (surprising) Places to Find God

Great opportunities for spiritual growth

Many of us fall into the subtle trap of thinking the only place to find God is at church. If we’re not expecting to find God everywhere, we might just miss great opportunities for help, healing, and spiritual growth. Here are five places where God awaits you:
At Work
The relationships you have, the results you achieve, the quality and mindfulness with which you do your work can all be the stuff of holiness. Plus, the money you earn to support your family and the esteem you hold as a contributor to the world can either help serve the kingdom or be an impediment to it. Each day we “suit up and show up” at work we get opportunities to learn more about ourselves and to contribute our gifts to the good of the world.

In Difficult Relationships
It’
s easy to love other people when everything’s going well. But when there are hurt feelings, mistrust, or clashing wills,  relationships don’t feel very much as though they are of God. Yet it is at just those times, that we can witness the movement of God in our lives, leading us to healing, trust, and cooperation. These can be opportunities to let go of character defects and to exercise virtues.

In Our Failings
We all like to be heroes. But it’s a given that each of us will fail in our lives. Nevertheless, when we hit our limits or even when we sin, we can turn to God for acceptance, mercy, and the strength to make amends and sin no more. In that turning to God and in our opening ourselves up to God’s grace and forgiveness, we become better people.

In Loneliness
Our hearts are restless until they rest in you, O God. Rather than trying to fill the emptiness with mindless entertainment or indulging our cravings, sit still and find God in the emptiness. It takes patience and courage and humility, but you will hear the “still small voice” of God even in the midst of your emptiness responding to your loneliness and restlessness with the only love that fully satisfies.

In Pleasure
Many people seem to think that if something’s fun, it must be at least partially wrong. Yet God gives us the world to live in and enjoy. In the words of St. Ireneaus, the “glory of God is a human being fully alive.” Therefore, pleasure is a place to meet God, whether it be the pleasure of nature, of playing, of loving one another, of beauty, or of the occasional overwhelming conviction that we are loved by God.
