Merriam Webster defines “self confidence” as “confidence in oneself and in one's powers and abilities."

Wikipedia tells us that Professor Raj Persaud posts that true self-confidence comes from an attitude where you: “Promise yourself, no matter how difficult the problem life throws at you, that you will try as hard as you can to help yourself. You acknowledge that sometimes your efforts to help yourself may not result in success, as often being properly rewarded is not in your control”

Self esteem  has been directly connected to an individual's social network, the activities they participate in, and what they hear about themselves from others.

Positive self-esteem has been linked to factors such as psychological health, mattering to others, and both body image and physical health. On the contrary, low self-esteem has been associated with the outcomes of depression, health problems, and antisocial behavior.

Here are some quotes about self-confidence:

“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.” ~e.e. cummings

Hmmm, Well now could be lol I think you should always build people up not tear them down. Personally I was always the bullies worst nightmare lol

  • Susan--Were we separated at birth?...lol... I also have always been a crusader for the underdog, having been one myself, and believe in helping people feel better about themselves whenever possible...:)

    Hi Bob,

Yes, I had a very good parent that taught me how to be a good person, stand up for myself and to believe in myself. I was an only child with only one parent due to divorce. But my mom is a strong, good person and taught me to be the same. I agree there are far to many that do not have that and it's a shame. On the other hand there are many that use the broken home pattern as an excuse but that did NOT fly with my mom :) I did all that I could to help others in school and was a crusader for the underdog always have been I believe in building up not tearing down.

  • Susan--You obviously had very good parents who supported and reinforced your self-worth and esteem...so many people were not as fortunate and sought approval from people who didn't have their best interests at heart...the lack of authentic parental focus on their child's psychological well being is one of the main causes of a child seeking approval from outside sources...for the child it takes years to recognize this and start the healing process...therapy helps...at least it did for me...:)

It has amazed me since I childhood that so many seem to let (what they think) others think of them define them. When in fact the only thing that determines us is ourselves. Everyone is only as good as they think they are and what really seems odd to me is more than not most of the time others think more of us than WE think of our self.

The only thing that you CAN NOT do is that which you choose.

  • Thanks Merle for commenting.  Keep on believing!

  • Great quotes Sandy and you have to believe in yourself.
