Morality Right or Wrong and Who Decides?

Morality Right or Wrong and Who Decides?

By: Susan Boston 4/17/2014

 morality

Morality opens a serious can of worms as brain juices start flowing. Huge gaps in theological thinking can and will divide many people.

Collective Universal thoughts are that indeed right and wrong does exist. This concept is pretty much agreed upon but that’s where total agreement normally ends.
Let me give you an example:

What do you feel when you look at this picture…

morality

When you first viewed this picture what happened? Did you get the warm fuzzes, did you say, “Awe that is the most adorable puppy.”?

Many people would have some reasonable facsimile of that reaction right?
Now, what would you think if you knew that some cultures eat dog meat?

Not so warm and fuzzy now right?

By the same token, some countries (Do Not) eat cows, so as you can see many times right and wrong is not black and white. There is a very large area in our lives that remains gray and will do so from now on.

So, who decides what is right and what is wrong then?
Is it what culture you live in, is it your own personal feelings, is it your government or the laws they make? Is it religion?

Now for the MIND MELT moment:

The one and only thing this issue has in common is...

• Culture (people)
• Personal feeling (people)
• Government (people)
• Laws (people)
• Religion (people)

People

morality

People make up cultures; they make up governments, laws and different beliefs in religion. Now, think about this:

People make the decisions as to what is right or wrong depending on what they believe. With that being established the next question is, “Is there really any official morality or right and wrong?”

We as a people are not perfect therefore, if we as a people (human race) are not a reflection of perfection, how then can we decide on morality [The mirror of perfection] not to mention what may or may not be right or wrong?

  • Susan, this is such a profound post.  Like Terri, my morality is based on Biblical Principles and the one in particular ....the Lord told us to love one another.  Thanks for sharing this ...really made me think.

    Hi Merle,

Yes so was mine I think lots of people would feel that way. This was something we were given to think about in college and it never left me. So many people and cultures in the world to learn to get along first we have to learn to accept that there is more than only one way. :) Thank you for your comments and taking the time to comment.

  • I also agree with James and a very interesting read.  And yes when I saw that dog image my first words were "aaaaaaaw  so cute" !!

    Good morning Terri and James,

Thank you both so much for your comments. First James let me say that I do agree with you 100% on the unconditional love. This is the only way I know how to love and when I give my love it is always unconditional. Granted there are times when something goes wrong that I wish I didn't (just being honest here) but still love carries me through and demands that I forgive.

Secondly I also agree with what you said Terri, I know that our way is only and always through God. To go a bit deeper past the Spiritual aspect though look even deeper into the rights and wrongs.

When I wrote this my mind set was more about our world rather than Spiritual issues. My thoughts were turned toward law makers and those that set the moral premises on Earth. What, Who, How and Why are these particular people the ones in charge of what is right and what is wrong.

You and I and many others are agreed that we should follow Gods law however, there are many of those out there making those decisions that might not follow the law of God. Face it they too are human. What I want people to think about is do we just follow something because it's been deemed Gods wishes by mortal man.

Terri you and I also think alike in that, when all is said and done we as an individuals are left with our own principles. I think we will always regard Morality by our own Moral Standards what ever those standards might be.

Thank you both again for your great insight in your comments

The scripture at Jeremiah 10:23 says "O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his own steps."  Susan I believe the scripture above says it all. This is a great post which I hope will make some people think about Morality Right or Wrong and Who Decides? In my opinion I believe this is left up to the individual and mine is based on Bible principles from God.
