While AdSense is a phenomenal way to start earning income from a website, it’s by no means the end game. There are many ways you can make more money once a site’s proven its potential through AdSense.

Though Google doesn’t disclose how much of a cut they take from the ads they place on people’s sites, experts estimate it at between 30% and 50%. If you cut out Google, that profit margin can be yours.

You can as much as double your income just from this one technique. Here’s how to go about it.

Let’s say you have a site that’s been making $500 a month on AdSense so far. That means that Google is making anywhere from $250 to $500 a month off your site.

Instead of using the Google network to sell your ads, why not go directly to the people who are advertising on your site?

Start by compiling a list of your advertisers. View your site from several different browsers, using free online proxies to change your IP.

This will give you a variety of different ads. It’ll also show you ads that might only display in certain geographic locations.

Put all these advertisers in a big list.

There are many different offers you could make the advertiser.

One of the easiest set-ups is to check if they have an affiliate program. If so, just sign up for their program and promote it on your site.

It’s very possible that the ad you see on your site was already being promoted by an affiliate. That means that not only was Google collecting 30% to 50%, but so was the affiliate. That means that when you go direct as an affiliate, you’ll make quite a bit more money.

Another way to monetize is to sell them leads. Just put a name, email and possibly phone number field in place of your ad. Collect user information, then sell the data to different companies.

Note: Yes, this is completely legal and ethical, provided you disclose everything.

Finally, you can simply offer to sell your ads to the advertiser at a cheaper rate than they’re currently paying.

If you’re going through an affiliate program, you’ll never actually have to pick up a phone. Just click the sign up button.

If you’re planning on selling leads or ads, you’ll probably want to actually make a phone call to make your pitch.

The pitch is very simple: “You’ve been spending money on my site already, it seems to be working for you, and I’d like to give you a cheaper rate.”

If you both split the savings from not going through Google, you’ll both save/earn between 15% and 25% more.

These are very simple ways of increasing your AdSense income by taking your existing advertisers and going direct rather than using an ad network.

Most people who come to an AdSense website and click on an ad simply won’t come back after they click. That means that for that visitor, you probably earned just a few cents. What if you could earn a lot more per visitor, over the course of a few weeks or months?

List building allows you to do this. Here’s how.

Instead of focusing on getting clicks to your AdSense ads, make your list the most prominent thing.

Use techniques like hover overs and squeeze pages to increase your opt-in rate. Create some sort of prize, gift or free report that they will receive when they sign up.

Track your sign-up rate and split test different set-ups to get your opt-in rate as high as you can. While your opt-in might be low in the beginning, it should be higher than 10% with some split testing.

It’s important to remember that it’s against AdSense’s Terms of Service to paste AdSense code into emails. Yes, it can be done from an HTML and JavaScript perspective, but it could very well get your account disabled.

So how do you take advantage of this list once you’ve built it?

Do it by writing teasers, with the bulk of the content being on your website. The actual content has the AdSense ads in it.

For example, let’s say you run a site about how to decrease your mile time.

You might send out a brief email about why it’s so important to count your steps per breath. Then you say that if they want to find the exact techniques and steps-to-breath ratios, they need to visit the article on your site. You give them the link.

They then land on the site, read the article and have a chance of clicking on your ads.

And so on. Unlike AdSense, where you only get one chance to monetize on your traffic, you can now repeatedly send them interesting emails that they’ll open, click through to and read.

This list you’re building could provide you with AdSense income for months and years to come. Even if search engine traffic dies down, you’ll still be able to make money from your list for a long time while you get other income sources set up.

The key with this technique is to write really good content. That way, your readers will be trained to know that whenever they click on a link from you in an email, it’s going to be good content on the other end.

To summarize, once you have a website that’s getting traffic and making money with AdSense, you should seriously think about building a list. Building a list allows you to monetize the traffic over months and years, rather than just one click.

When you read content by someone who’s found their voice, there’s a really distinct ring to it. You can tell they’re really passionate, really self-expressed and really know what they’re talking about.

People are moved by those who speak with their real voice. Yet what most people don’t realize is that almost everyone who’s found their voice had to put in a lot of work to find that voice. It doesn’t usually come naturally.

So how do you find your voice as a content marketer?

If you love internet marketing, get into the internet marketing field. If you love knitting, get into the knitting field.

Ask yourself: What’s a topic that you could talk about for hours and hours on end? What’s a topic that you’d talk about and obsess about even if you weren’t getting paid?

What’s something that really lights you up in life and gets you excited?

While not every passion can be turned into a career, you’d be surprised at how many people do manage to turn their passions into money, even in very obscure fields.

Start with what you’re really passionate about. It’ll come through in your voice.

Try to write without censorship. Don’t worry about grammatical correctness or political correctness.

If you’re speaking from your real voice, you’re probably going to turn some people off. However, you’ll also really attract the kinds of people you should be attracting.

When you’re writing content, try to write as if you were speaking one on one to a friend. Write naturally, in a casual yet self-expressed and passionate manner.

Can you tell the difference between someone who’s written something and really cares if you succeed, versus someone who’s just writing the content to write the content?

Most likely, you can tell that the former has a completely different feel to it. Naturally, it’s the people who really want to help us that we feel drawn to.

When you’re writing content, ask yourself: Who are you trying to help with this content? How would you like their life to change as a result of you writing this content for them?

If you really want to help people, they can sense that. It comes through in your writing and your voice. It creates loyalty.

Your voice isn’t “one thing” that people can point to and say whether it’s good or not. It’s more of the overall vibe of your content, how everything you say is presented. A great voice will create a sense of community, loyalty and following, while a weak voice will turn people away from your content.

If you have poor credit history, the only way to start establishing a stronger history is to open a credit account and start making on-time payments regularly. Unfortunately, people with poor credit will have a hard time opening a new credit account to start building their credit.

That’s where the secured credit card comes in. A secured credit card can be opened by anybody, even if you’ve just gone through foreclosure and bankruptcy.

With a secured credit card, you can start re-establishing your credit history and improving your credit score.

A secured credit card is essentially a pre-paid credit card. You have to put down a deposit first, which the bank will hold as collateral.

Once you have the deposit, you can then lend up to that amount.

For example, if you put down a $500 deposit, you can then lend up to $500. The $500 will earn you interest, just as it would if you had put it in a savings account.

This takes the risk away for the bank, because if you don’t make your payments they can just take your deposit. It allows you to start building your credit and showing that you’re creditworthy without someone having to take a financial risk.

Unlike credit cards which make money on interest, secured cards usually make their money in fees. They’ll still charge an interest on the balance, but their money is primarily made in annual fees.

Having your card appear as an unsecured card on your credit report will look better than if you had a secured card.

Make sure you keep a balance on the card and that you make on-time payments every month, even if your balance is just $20. The goal is to build a history of on-time payments and stable accounts.

Short Term Vs. Long Term Goals

When people think of goal setting, they often think of long term goals such as making $1 million dollars or buying their dream home.  Long terms goals are very important, but so are short term goals.  Short term goals can help you stay motivated as you are working towards those long term goals.  They are the little pats on the back along the way.

They can be especially gratifying in network marketing.  A short term goal allows you to see that you are making progress in the bigger goal of having a successful business.  A short term goal should be something that you can accomplish in about three months and something that you would not normally be able to do if it weren’t for your business.  Here are some examples of short term goals:

-          A new summer wardrobe

-          A weekend getaway with your spouse

-          Pay off a credit card

-          Have a debt free Christmas

-          Remodel your kids room

-          Buy a treadmill

Long term goals are those that keep you in your business for the long haul.  Your short term goals are great and keep you motivated, but the long term goal is what it’s all about.  It’s a great idea to have a visual board for your long term goals so that you see it as much as possible.  Also, make a measurement stick – and mark off how much closer you’re getting.  Even if it’s only 5% your first year, you are that much closer!

Although we’ve identified what short and long term goals are, what most people get stuck with is the most important part…HOW to actually set their goals.  Here’s a quick step by step guide on how to set both your long term and short term goals:

1. Set aside time.  It has to be quiet and uninterrupted time.  I find it’s best if you do this away from your house or business.  Find a place that is inspiring for you.  Go to the beach, in the mountains, or another favorite stop.  Take a pad of paper, pencil/pens and 2 different colored highlighters with you.
2. Start with a free flowing list of things you’d like to accomplish.  Ask yourself these questions, and write down any answer that come to mind:

1. What do I want to do?
2. What do I want to have?
3. Where do I want to go?
4. Where do I want to live?
5. How many homes do I want to have? Where?
6. What contributions do I want to make to my community or the world?
7. How much do I want to earn?
8. How much do I want to invest?
9. How much do I want to save?
10. What do I want to do for my children?
11. What do I want to do for my parents?
12. What will I do for fun?

3. You should have a pretty long list!!  Probably a couple of pages.  Now go back through and split between your long term and your short term goals.  Remember, short term goals are things that you can accomplish in a 3 month period.  Long term goals would take longer than that.  Highlight short terms goals one color and long term goals another.
4. Starting with short term goals:  Take a new sheet of paper and write down your TOP TEN short term goals.  Those you feel the most attachment to.  (But keep your big list…you can use the rest later.
5. Schedule those short term goals into appropriate quarters of your upcoming year.  Three or so a quarter (one will have 4).  You have set your short term goals for the year!
6. Now let’s turn to your long term goals.  This is a little harder, and often takes the buy in of your spouse as well.  But this is a good place to start.  I believe in taking the opposite approach with long term goals.  Start culling your list 5 at a time. Line through your LEAST important 5 long term goals.  Next 5.  Do this until you CANNOT compromise OR you are down to 5-8 long term goals.
7. When you get home, talk to your spouse about what the MOST IMPORTANT FIVE long term goals are for you to work towards.  Now you have your long term goals.

Both short term goals and long term goals are important.  Take some time to set your short term goals and long term goals this week.  Share them with your family – you’ll find they are much more patient with your business when they know what your goals really are!

How to Answer “What’s in It for Me” in Fifteen Seconds

The most important question to answer in any kind of marketing has always been: “What’s in it for me?” If your marketing and your content don’t answer this question in fifteen seconds or less, chances are you’re going to lose your visitor. If you really hammer the answer home in the first fifteen seconds, chances are they’ll read the entire article.

==> Before You Write Anything

Before you write any kind of content, take a look at the design of your website. In particular, look at your header.

Does your overall website convey a benefit to the reader? For example, if your header says “Bob’s Website,” chances are readers aren’t going to get a sense of what they could get from your site.

On the other hand, if your header said “SEO Tips from a 10 Year Veteran,” people are much more likely to perk up. If that’s coupled with good design that builds credibility, you have a strong chance of getting the reader to pay attention.

==> Writing Your Headline

In direct response marketing, the headline is often considered the most important component of any marketing piece.

That’s because it’s the first thing that people read. It’s your first and sometimes only chance to capture your reader’s attention.

People who read your headline should instantly be able to tell exactly what your content is about. It should hammer home the benefit and get them excited to learn more.

Most people’s eyes will gravitate to any graphics on the page before they even read any text.

Using graphics to convey a benefit can be an incredibly powerful tactic. For example, if you’re writing about how to earn money by being a consultant, holding up a picture of your first big consulting check can convey the “what’s in it for me” answer much more powerfully than words ever could.

Make sure you also take advantage of the space right beneath an image. Research has shown that captions underneath images are some of the most read parts of any website.

==> Using the Opening Paragraph Wisely

Finally, spend a lot of time on your opening paragraph. If your opening paragraph doesn’t quickly convey the benefits of reading your content, you’re probably going to lose your reader. Even if you’re writing a five-page 5,000 word article, your time would be well spent if you spent 20% of it on your first paragraph.

The first paragraph should start out with a strong “hook” sentence. Then the next 3-4 sentences should explain exactly what they’ll get from reading the rest of your article.

If you combine all these techniques, you’ll be able to convey to your readers exactly what they’ll get from reading your content in fifteen seconds or less. This will increase your readership, bring back more returning visitors and ultimately bring you more sales.

Where Do I Find Content For My Blog?

Blogging continues to be the best way to build your list. To be effective with your blogging, you need to blog daily. This can be a huge undertaking, especially when just entering the world of internet marketing. There is always the struggle of what to share on your blog. Here are a few recommendations for sources you can use to provide content for your blog.

You can visit other blogs in your niche to find content. If you find yourself with nothing to blog about, see what other bloggers are talking about. Visit other blogs to get inspiration and ideas.  If you like what you read and how it is written, share the post on your blog, but make sure to give credit to the original writer. Otherwise, rewrite the content, sharing your own thoughts and opinions about what you read.

Your day to day experiences provide more content for your blog than you think. Stop and take a look at what’s going on in the world around you. Perhaps you had an interesting conversation with someone that you can relate to your niche. Maybe you had someone give you an objection you never encountered, and you handled it terribly. Share those experiences. You will be surprised at how many people will be able to relate to you.

What have you been learning lately? Have you been reading a great book, or have you attended an awesome seminar? Write a blog post about it! You may make the assumption that because YOU know something, that everybody else probably knows it already. That couldn’t be further from the truth! The more you grow and expand your knowledge base, the more you will have to share. Someone will resonate with what you have to share!

You can write a ‘how to’ blog post. How-to’s are actually awesome traffic-getting posts. For example, you could write a blog post on how to fill out a profile on a social media site. You could mention some tips for making the profile stand out, and tell your readers the type of information to enter into their profile. The ‘how-to’ options are endless. You could write a how-to on how to use Google! Don’t worry about whether the task seems menial, write it anyway. Again, you don’t know who will read your content and receive tremendous help!

The news is a great source of blog content! If you see a news story related to your niche, share it! For example, if you’re a home-based business owner, and you see a story about additional tax benefits for home-based business owners, share it on your blog! This is the type of thing that really boosts your credibility, because you’re staying current with the trends! Mind you, you don’t need to comb the networks LOOKING for content. Just keep your eyes open for news stories.

What questions are being asked by your colleagues? Are they looking for marketing trends? Are they asking how to generate more leads? Look for the questions, and then write a blog post providing the answers. Don’t worry about knowing the answer; just be able to find it!  The more questions you answer, the more valuable you become!

Blogging is a great way to gain a following and build a list, but it can be difficult. Use the sources above to produce an endless stream of content for your blog!

Should You Enable Image Ads In Adsense?

There are three settings you can choose in AdSense for what kind of ads to display: Text Ads Only, Text and Image Ads or Image and Rich Media ads. Which one should you choose? Will one result in higher click throughs and conversions? Here are the pros and cons, as well as the approach you can take.

==> The Pros and Cons of Text Ads

There are a few big things text ads have going for them.

First of all, there’s a ton of inventory. That means it’s unlikely that Google will have to show a Public Service Ad (PSA) because they don’t have enough ad inventory.

People are also less likely to have “banner blindness” towards text. If your ads are well positioned and have good fonts / colors, you have a very good chance of getting read and getting clicked.

They can also blend into your overall site layout a lot more, resulting in a better-looking site. You can make it look like an integrated part of the design, rather than a glaring advertisement.

The downside of text ads? They don’t stand out. There’s nothing that grabs attention about them. Once someone is used to the AdSense ads on your site, it can become very easy to just skip over them.

Image and Rich Media ads have the main benefit of being able to draw a lot more attention. They can use animation, giant headlines, etc. to get your user to click on the ad.

However, it’s important to remember that only one ad will be displayed. In other words, that one advertiser has to perform well enough to make up for showing one ad instead of 3-4 text ads.

For some users, image ads means reduced banner blindness because they’re used to text ads. For other users, it means more banner blindness because they’re just so used to graphic ads.

Keep in mind that it’s in Google’s best interest to help you make more money. The more you earn, the more they get as commissions.

Google works on an eCPM auction model. In other words, the ads that make you the most money per thousand impressions will over time be shown more often, while losing ads will be phased out.

That said, the auction process could take a long time. So to answer the question …

==> Should You Run Image Ads?

The answer is yes. But split test them against text ads. You can do this either using a split testing script like Google Website Optimizer, or just running each for a week or two and switching them about.

Figure out which one works better for your site. Then run with the winner going forward. This is definitely a test that should be done, because the difference can be quite dramatic.

Who Is A Prospect?

When you are looking to recruit someone to your team, you need to know WHO an ideal prospect is, and what to look for when searching for them? In a nutshell, a prospect is someone who could benefit from the opportunity that your company provides.  Your goal is to 1) find out if they could benefit from the opportunity and 2) let them know about the opportunity.

Think about this very carefully.  As you go through each day and you are looking for prospects, you are looking for someone who has a problem that your company can provide a solution for.

So who is someone who could benefit from what you have to offer?  Generally it is someone who might be looking for:

-          Additional Income

-          Flexibility

-          Security

-          Different Lifestyle

-          Vacations

-          _____(Insert your company benefits here!)

Your company may have certain nutritional benefits, or legal benefits that may be of particular interest to certain people.  Whatever that list of benefits is…commit them to memory.  That list is something that will be a catalyst for you.

When you hear someone who mentions ANY of those buzz words, it should send bells ringing!  They are a prospect.  They can benefit from what your company has to offer!

Exposing Them To The Solution

Now that you’ve found someone who can benefit,   the next piece of the puzzle is to let them know about the opportunity your company has. This is your opportunity to say:

“I couldn’t help but to hear that you are looking for ______.  I know exactly how you feel!!  I felt the same way about six months ago!  I found a great opportunity to change that when I started my business with _______.  Can I give you some information about them?”

With this simple statement you have let them know that you heard their “issue”.  You/your Company has a benefit that can solve it through the opportunity they provide. And, you have connected with a prospect.

You will find that almost everyone is a prospect.  And if they aren’t, they generally know someone who is!  The key is to keep your ears open.  And then don’t be afraid to open your mouth shortly afterwards!  Nothing is worse then KNOWING someone is a prospect…and then watch them walk away in the opposite direction because you were too stifled to do something about it!

4 Tips On The Basics of Good Content Structure

The Basics of Good Content Structure

Having good content structure is crucial to writing content that people can easily consume and understand. Having a good structure also makes the writing process easier for you. Here are the main elements to well-structured content.

==> The Introduction

The first sentence of any article needs to be carefully crafted to catch attention. People should instantly be able to grasp what the gist of the article is just by reading the first sentence.

Likewise, the first paragraph should elaborate on the first sentence and get people interested in reading the rest of the content.

==> Let Them Know What to Expect

Before jumping into the meat of the content, let them know what to expect in the rest of the content.

This can be as detailed as “we’ll cover X, Y and Z now” to as simple as “here’s how to do X.”

The most important thing is to prepare people to receive whatever you’re about to discuss.

==> Main Talking Points

Go through each of your talking points, one by one.

Make sure to separate your content into easily digestible chunks. Don’t just write a 500-word article from top to bottom, but break it up into subsections and subheads.

Also make sure that you word as much of your content in “what’s in it for you” terms. Users should feel like you’re speaking directly to them.

It often helps to present a few different solutions, angles or opinions in your main points. If you’re talking about investing for example, give them a few different techniques they can use.

Give examples. The more theoretical your article is, the less likely they are to remember it a few weeks from now. Examples help take something that’s theoretical and turn it into something more concrete. People are much more likely to remember an example demonstrating a principle than just the theory.

==> The Conclusion

The last paragraph of your article is the conclusion. The conclusion should sum up everything you just wrote about, plus perhaps reiterate the most important point.

Sometimes it’s best to leave the user with a concrete piece of action they can immediate take at the end of the conclusion. At other times, the conclusion just wraps up the whole article nicely.

If you’re selling a product, the conclusion is where you want to put your call to action. Tell people exactly what it is you want them to do. Be assertive and make sure to recap all the main benefits to them taking action now rather than later.

These are the main parts of good content structure. Following this structure will help give your users a good sense of what to expect from your article and keep them engaged as they’re reading. It’ll also make it easier for you to organize your thoughts into a coherent chronological order before you start writing.

User generated content is a new buzz phrase that’s been getting a lot of attention recently. Websites can take off in popularity if they have great user generated content, without the creators having to put much work into content creation.

What exactly is user generated content? How does it work? How do you encourage user generated content? Let’s take a look.

==> What Is User Generated Content?

User generated content is any content that’s generated by the user base and not by content creators of the company.

High profile examples include Wikipedia and YouTube. The staff at Wikipedia and YouTube don’t spend all their time creating entries or videos. Instead, their job is to make it easy for other people to create content.

Other people do, and Wikipedia and YouTube benefit from it.

Lower profile examples include forums and blog comments. Again, these aren’t created by the site owner, but can still draw a lot of search engine traffic.

So how does one encourage people to create more content?

It’s very hard to create desire. Trying to get someone to want something they don’t already naturally want is very hard.

On the other hand, giving someone an avenue to talk about things they already want to talk about can be a great shortcut to amassing a ton of user generated content.

YouTube exemplifies this principle. YouTube didn’t create the desire for people to share videos, they just made that desire possible through the internet.

What do your users already want to talk about that they’re not able to talk about yet?

==> Make Them Feel Like They’re Part of Something

A sense of community and purpose can go a long way towards inspiring content generation.

A forum, for example, often thrives when there’s a sense of people helping one another out. People are more inspired to post their success stories and help other people out in their hardships.

On the other hand, forums where there’s animosity and lack of community tend to die down over time.

Wikipedia also does this really well. People feel like they’re part of a larger purpose and that their time put into generating content is for a good cause.

==> Make It Fun

Don’t make it feel like work to generate content. Make it fun.

For example, when Gmail wanted to have users create a video for them, they didn’t make it sound like work.

Instead, they made it sound like a contest and made all the descriptions of the video they wanted very bright. They got tons of submissions and had a stellar video to use at the end of the day.

If you’re not employing user generated content as part of your web strategy, you’re missing out. The content generated can bring a lot of traffic to your website with barely any additional cost.

If you’re trying to get your content to “spark” and go viral, it really helps to have a strong understanding of what kind of content tends to go viral. Of course, nobody can predict what will go viral, nor can they make something go viral 100% of the time. But by understanding what kind of content tends to go viral, you stand a much better chance of creating something viral yourself.

Here are a few of the main attributes of things that tend to go viral.

==> It’s Human

It’s rare that a factual, statistical or economical video goes viral. Instead, it’s usually the most human videos that go viral.

The singing homeless man on the street. The baby laughing at something senseless. An incredible display of guitar prowess.

==> Strong Emotional Content

The more emotions you can arouse in your audience, the better.

Let’s take one of the world’s most viewed videos, the “Charlie Bit my Finger” video. The video features a baby whose brother bit his finger; he sits there laughing and complaining at the same time.

This video has an astounding 1,270,091 views at the time of writing this.  There are a lot of other versions of this video with millions of views – more than the population in the United States.

One of the main reasons this video took off so strongly is because of how palpable the emotions were in the video. The watcher can almost “follow along” with the baby’s emotions and also experience the joy of playing with your baby brother.

Another type of content that does really well are videos that are informational. The key here is that the videos really have to provide content that can’t be found anywhere else.

For example, one video that went viral featured a science professor showing how to light a candle without ever touching the wick.

A content video that went viral during the 2008 election was a video of a dozen famous actors all asking people to vote.

Informational videos work in many different industries, but the most important thing is that there’s something truly unique to them.

Content that tends to appeal to specific groups of people tends to do very well if they have strong emotional or informational content.

For example, political videos that are either informational or emotional can go viral just by being passed among a party’s members.

New food laws, something which may be seen as boring, could be very interesting to vegans if it affects the foods they’ll be able to purchase. A video about the new laws could really take off among that specific community.

These are some of the factors that go into determining whether or not a video goes viral. At the end of the day, a video going viral really means that a lot of people want to pass on your content. The key, as with many other things in business, is to just create something so amazing that people want to share it.
