Truth - Is There Such A Thing?

3818712515?profile=originalWhat is truth?  This was the famous question posed by Pilate at the trial of JC.  Interestingly enough, man has been pursuing the answer for thousands of years, mainly because he refuses to accept the answer JC gives.    In fact, modern man has determined that there is no truth or if there is, it is all relative – my truth, your truth, their truth; all have same value. In other words, "It may be true for you but it isn't true for me".

The poet Steve Turner  wrote a brilliant parody of this attitude and called it "Creed".  Part of it goes like this:

I believe that each man must find the truth that is right for him.

Reality will adapt accordingly.

The universe will readjust. History will alter.

I believe that  there is no absolute truth excepting the truth that there is no absolute         truth.

This paradigm shift from absolute truth flies in the face of The Law of Noncontradiction which I learned in college simply means that if A and B contradict each other then they both cannot be true. In other words, if your religion is true, then mine is false. Or if my religion is true, then yours is false. I would contend that truth does exist and can be known. "Truth is truth whether everyone believes it or no one believes it".

Think about this:  Are moral truths relative? If that is the case, how then can there be universal human rights?

Stephen McAndrew’s book, Why It Doesn't Matter What You Believe If It's Not True: Is There Absolute Truth? argues that if there are universal human rights, then moral truths also must be absolute. A relative theory of truth is inconsistent with morally condemning acts of others, no matter how heinous. How could one judge the atrocities committed by Hitler during Second World War ?

Here are a few quotes to consider:

1. Christianity is realistic because it says that if there is no truth, there is also no hope; and there can be no truth if there is no adequate base. It is prepared to face the consequences of being proved false and say with Paul: If you find the body of Christ, the discussion is finished, let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die. It leaves absolutely no room for a romantic answer. ― Francis Schaeffer

2. Belief doesn't create truth. Unbelief doesn't destroy truth. Christian faith goes beyond reason but not against reason. —Paul E. Little (from, Know Why You Believe)

3. Truth is so obscured nowadays, and lies so well established, that unless we love the truth we shall never recognize it. – Blaise Pascal

What a wonderful discussion I love the depth of thought. The discussion is so much deeper than what one can express on the add comment section lol

Thank you for the wonderful premise to ponder for the day.
