How To Build Resistance To Stress!

When a body is under stress it demands for more vitamins, minerals and amino acids. This demand is increased by a factor of 10. When our body is under attack, under stress, we need more nutrition and more fuel. A stressed body has a hard time assimilating nutrients and eliminating toxins efficiently.

While living in a crazy world, we need to give ourselves all that we can get. Juggling our daily tasks have become more challenging than ever before due to economic changes and pressures that we have these days.

As I continue to study Massage Therapy I am constantly learning about health strategies to use which will allow clients to build resistance to stress.

            These are the following healthful tips I suggest for managing your stress levels.

  1. Go for a walk! Simple walking even if it's a short walk in the beginning, making sure that you have good walking shoes can be one of the best forms of exercise. Even if it is only ten minutes, remember that any new habit begins with small steps.
  2. Jog, bike, or swim. Exercise will increase the flow of endorphins, those natural pain relievers, also known as the runners high! Exercising two or three times a week will improve your circulation and help to relieve tension and anxiety. You will also start to enjoy life more!
  3. Get outside.Regular exposure to outdoor light and fresh air can reduce stress in general to lift your spirits. This will also aid in SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder)
  4. Stretch! Practice stretching every hour or two. Make sure you do this properly, and ask your massage therapist for suggestions. Stretching will help to relieve muscle tension and even prevent injury.
  5. If you feel that stress is overwhelming you, please do not hesitate to seek a professional counselor.
  6. Get an annual physical to rule out any conditions that may be contributing to your stress.
  7. Ask your physician or a naturopathic doctor for recommendations for vitamins and supplements. Some supplements help to increase energy levels and balance hormones and other chemicals in the body.
  8. Drink water! Many of us forget to drink enough pure water.
  9. Take a Yoga or Tai Chi Class.
  10. Get regular massage to reinforce your ability to let go of stress.

Migraines: Not Just Another Headache!

In my last blog post, Reaching Out To Offer A Helping Hand, I spoke of a friend who found relief for her migraines from a whole food product I referred her to. This is a continuation of that post as we divulge what a migraine really is.

Migraines are debilitating, period. Those who suffer may experience cognitive impairment affecting one's ability to work and interact with family and social life. Migraines tend to run in families, so if you have a relative who also had them, you may also be at risk.

It would be a lengthy process to define each type of migraine here, however we can talk about some of the triggers:

Food (Wine, Beer, Chocolate, MSG, Aspartame, Caffeine, Processed Foods, Aged Cheeses, Salty Food)
Bright Lights
Sun Glare
Computer Screens
Loud Sounds
Unpleasant Odor, Fragrance and Strong Smells
Depression/Anxiety/Tension and Medication Overuse

What can we do to avoid these triggers? Well, we can't change the weather, however we can learn to eat with the process of elimination. My trigger was Gluten and Stress!  Once I eliminated my food allergy and reduced my stress levels , my Tension Headaches reduced significantly to being completely eliminated.

Learn what triggers your migraines and keep a diary with you to write these down. You will want to show this to your doctor as well.

If stress is a factor and trigger in your daily life,  you may need to consider alternative ways to reduce your levels. Reducing cortisol will naturally reduce stress in the body and may give your body the much needed break it deserves to break this cycle of pain and discomfort associated with migraines. 

Massage Therapy is also another great way to reduce stress. Just make sure you do not have a migraine when you get the massage as this could make it worse. Consult with your massage therapist for further information regarding a treatment protocol.

The key is to avoid the triggers and treatment to reduce the frequency and duration of these horrible headaches. The American Headache Society is a great resource for anyone who needs help.

Reaching Out To Offer A Helping Hand!

I was recently blessed with the opportunity to help a friend who suffered from chronic migraines. This individual suffered for several years using OTC's (over the counter analgesics) and medications to treat the debilitating pain and symptoms associated with these headaches. As I logged onto my facebook page one morning , I noticed my friend's post and her attempt to what may have been her last resort for treating the pain; Botox! Yes botox for migraines! I have never heard of this.

"This Is Life. Right Now"

I was sitting in my car today enjoying the twenty minutes  before working on a client. The warm sun felt so good as I hydrated my body with the filtered water I had brought along with me. Nothing feels better than this! I was truly in the moment, taking deep breaths in and out, centering my body.

How many of us do this? This is simply called Mindfulness. Being Mindful is an awareness that is important especially today with the demands on our time and energy. Instead of trying to control all aspects of things in our lives, we need to learn to let go and accept those situations that we cannot change.

Without the proper stress management techniques we are unable to protect our body and mind from the harmful effects of stress. Learning how to be mindful is a technique we all can learn to use on a daily basis.

During Times Of Stress!

Staying well naturally can be a challenge for most of us, especially during times of stress. Poor nutrition combined with too much stress can weaken the immune system, making you more prone to bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic pathogens. When your body is stressed it produces cortisol, a stress hormone that contributes to the worsening of inflammatory conditions and auto immune disorders. Cortisol pulls calcium from the bones, when long-term production occurs.  Reducing stress can stop cortisol production allowing the body to return to a balanced state.

Here are some important tips to improve your health:
 Improve Sleep
Stay Active
Create or Maintain Friendships
Express Yourself (Write, Paint, Dance, Create)

Nutritional Suggestions:

  1. Eat at least five servings of fresh locally grown, organic, tree or vine ripened fruits and vegetables each day. 
  2. Eat from each of the food groups every day :
  3. Eat food that is in it's natural state or as close to its natural state as possible.
  4. Reduce and minimize contact with toxins such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi, pesticides, smoke, herbicides, exhaust, industrial wastes and hormones.

Golden Advice!

I remember going to a seminar called Get Motivated. I had the privilege to sit among thousands of people who were all in the same room for the same reason. To get motivated! I remember Goldie Hawn's advice on how to achieve happiness.

1. Don't look for happiness in material things. She said , Fame and fortune, success and money don't make you happy. They are not the reason for deep-seated happiness.

2. Learn to laugh. Laugh at yourself, find your place of joy, find happiness in your worth.

3. Know what is important to you. You can't live your life like someone else. You must know what is important for you to be truly happy and live life by those standards.

Goldie reminded us all that once we realize how important it is to be content we will:

Be Healthier
Be Problem Solvers
Have Better Relationships
Live A More Fulfilling Life

Becoming Healthy Is A Work In Progress!

I recently heard the phrase being healthy is a work in progress, and reflecting on the past few years of trying to be healthy, I have realized that I have finally made some progress towards knowing how to treat and help my body get what it needs.

For example, two years ago, I found out about my wheat allergy from my ENT. No one told me to exclude wheat from my diet, so I began my research and found that a gluten free diet may be the only way to eat. In this discovery I  excluded wheat and  integrated gluten free foods into my diet. This process has been a journey towards better health and it has opened up new doors for exploring healthier choices.

Some of my exploring led me to a product called Laminine.

My family and I all reside in the home that my father left behind. It is a rather than large home built in the 1800's. The home is old and needs much work. MY mother wants to stay in the home, so we help her with the upkeep and maintenance.

I have recently started cleaning out a room but not just the normal kind of cleaning. This type of cleaning required a mask, eye goggles and a double Hepa Filtration Vacuum. The squirrels decided to make their home here this past winter. Has anyone ever seen what these critters do to your house? Needless to say, I was devastated. It's easy to say things like, What did I do to deserve this? Or Why Am I the one who gets stuck with this mess? Is this the hand that was dealt to me?

I very quickly started to look at the positive side of the situation. My mother and I started to find old valuables , such as vintage china and antique items that we had forgotten about. So the cleaning began and we polished up those valuable items to prepare them for auction.

We all have to remind ourselves that life will never be fair and sometimes during our difficult times we must deal with whatever hand has been received and just go ahead and play it. You can win and you can lose. It's all up to you how you play the game.

Life is filled with champions who drew poor hands and losers who drew terrific hands. You will never be dealt a hand that cannot be turned into a winning hand.

I am determined to take the initiative and pay the price in order to do whatever it takes to turn my hand into a winner in all situations I am dealt with. And that my friend is called Success!

Have you ever had an English Muffin style business? Fitting activity into the nooks and crannies of daily life? Most of us do. We have families , jobs , appointments , errands , and a business to top it all off. What about those of us who are in school besides that? How do we manage it all? In the nooks and crannies, folks.

Here are some tips to help us all stay focused on staying in activity:

1. Be Prepared:
Do you have your business cards, product brochures, catalogs, or whatever it may be, on hand and available for your prospects at all times. I keep some in my bag, glove compartment, and I always stick two business cards in my pocket when I go out. If I come home with those two cards in my pocket, then I did not do my job for the day.

Do you have a list? I hand write my list and then follow up with those contacts, setting up appointments and following up by calling people back. Important tip: Don't be late:)
Learn 3-way calls with your sponsor and team. Invite people to webinars.

2. Personal Development:
Read , read, read! Here are two books that may help: Dare to Dream and Work to Win, by Tom Barret. Our Jobs are to coach new business builders and Learn how to become leaders. There is no money that can buy this kind of growth.
Plug into your training calls and learn something new each day!

3. Have Patience:
This is not a get rich quick scheme. Don't quit before payday. A day can make the difference!

4. Listen:
Listen and care about what other people say and make them feel important. Take notes if you have to. Ask questions and listen to their answers.

5. Commit:
What are you willing to give up? We all need to sacrifice something in order to get where we want to be. Here is an example: The average person watches 29 hours of TV a week, this is equivalent to a part time job. Think of all the time wasted when he/she could have been growing their business.

There are two roads to take: The one most traveled and the one less traveled. Tip: Take the one less traveled.

Always be a student and make today count.

Be the difference for someone else. We all know people who walk around aimlessly; bump into them with a smile and share what you have with them.

Stop Wishing and Start Working. Build your part-time army=a lot of people doing a little bit.

I continue my education in massage therapy learning treatments for muscle injuries. I know how important it is for me to educate clients about self care and the repair process.

Your muscles, do not actually heal with muscle tissue, but with “foreign” substances including collagen. The resulting scar tissue is weaker, less elastic, and highly prone to re-injury. Once a muscle is damaged, it can become the source of a great deal of pain.

Repair of injured skeletal muscle is an area that continues to present a challenge for MT’s , Sports clinicians and researchers, due to the development of fibrosis which is the leading cause to loss of function and re-injury.

Injured skeletal muscle goes through a series of coordinated and interrelated phases of healing including degeneration, inflammation, regeneration and fibrosis.

Be The Light!

I stumbled upon this video tonight while I was doing research in my approach to massage therapy treatment to a client on mine who is quadriplegic.
I can never get attached to the outcome of the session, but I am always searching for new things that may help to make the session better.

The Four Main Principles To Look At When Running A Business:

Also, make sure your product is consumable. If you have a non-consumable product then you are basically unemployed until your next sale. You want repeat sales of consumable products.

3.Timing and Trends! During all cycles of the economy there are people who are making money and losing money. The $ makers are the ones in front of Large Trends. People who lose $ tend to disregard trends. So focus on what makes trends: Baby Boomers, born between 1946 and 1964. They are 1/3 of the US population and control 65% of all the money. Baby Boomers reshape every industry they go through. So study their buying patterns!
